I have asked this question at the P&G site and only got an answer full of double talk, so I am hoping someone here can answer for me. Does liquid Cheer (original...not for dark) actually provide better color protection than liquid Tide (original)?

Hmmmm...

I've been using Tide Unscented for years for all my laundry, kind of anathema around here I know, but I've never noticed any fading on dark colors. I use Tide unless I'm out and Cheer is on sale. I could never figure out the difference either.

Funny, one of my cousins thought Tide was P&Gs budget product and Cheer was the TOL product.

Cheer is P&G's detergent for colours, and does not contain optical brighteners or fabric whitening agents in most of it's formulas; though IIRC there may be a few that do, but they are labeled for white laundry or such.

Cheer also contains agents to prevent colours from fading and bleeding (oxygen bleach, and other chemicals).

Oxygen bleach cancels out the chlorine found in most tap water, and to and extend prevents colours from transfering onto other fabrics in the same wash bath. At least so the theory goes.

I get a kick out of the Cheer commercials with the "Launderess"...Now you woulda thought they would have our very own Diva of Laundry do that commercial.

For The Way You Wash Today!

Cheer is one of the few Amercian laundry detergents, besides the tree hugger brands, that is not loaded up with bleaches and OBAs.

My mom was a big Cheer user back in the day! That was her brand! I liked the smell of the old "blue" Cheer as well.

I still have a partial box of "All-Temperature" Cheer with PHOSPHATES (argh! call the cops!) Wonderful stuff.

I wish ONE of the current versions smelled like it -- sadly they're much stronger (not the unscented but it's hard for me to find).

I took the advice of a poster on these forums (sorry, can't remember who) and tried Woolite for Dark Laundry and found the scent much more pleasant. It makes a noticeable difference in the appearance of dark clothes.

Reaction

Tide gives me a rash all over whenever I have used it (twice). I have stuck with Cheer for years. I have the same reaction to Ivory bath soap. The Woolite tip sounds good. I believe I will try it. I tried Fogo recently for whites with pretty good results. I have a problem with the county water system and frequently get rust stains from the water (the plumbing is new, replacing it did not make the problem go away and finally the county owned up to it). I have to run the machine a cycle without any clothes in it to clear out the rust before doing any actual washing.

I really don't care for nearly all the Cheer formulations, but Cheer Darks is pretty good on the stuff you really don't want to fade. It works better with longer wash times too, IMHO...

We use Colorguard Cheer HE liquid for our dark clothing and even though its not marked as unscented, the clothing comes out without any smell at all.

I haven't seen that Cheer Fit liquid on the market shelves recently. That's the stuff they claim helps your clothes maintain their shape. Has that been withdrawn already?

If you read the labels on the boxes/bottles of laundry detergents it's hard to find something without any OBAs in them.
