Tide w/Downy

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

I've tried it once...the perfumey smell is somewhat nauseating in my opinion. Better is Original Tide w/Bleach, and my personal favorite is the one and only Fresh Start!!! :)

I think it's odd to put softener in with your detergent. Plus, most of it spins out before the rinse cycle, right?

Previous attempts at combining the two have not been very successful. Consumer Reports said they didn't clean as well as regular detergent, nor did they soften as well as a dedicated softener.

Having said all that, I never thought a cold water detergent could rival Tide w/ Bleach and I was dead wrong, so I suppose anything is possible. (In fact, I haven't moved my temp dial off ATC Cold for months, now.)

Has anyone tried Tide w/Downy? If so, what did you think?

TWD, not bad, but...

you have to use it sparingly. It took me a couple loads to get the right dose for our Frig FL. Usually for a full load it is about 3T. Don't really see suds but do notice a film cascading down on the window as it tumbles. By the third rinse the water is nearly clear. Didn't FAB do something like this in the early 70's? I know it was known for 'lemon fresh borax', yes? Don't know if we'll stick with it because I don't have the Downey smell (which both me & DW like) so we'll probably go back to the Bleach alternative version and add in the Downey to the f.s. compartment.

Glenn, there was a version of Fab in the 80s that did have fabric softener. I don't know about now, or if there even is Fab or Bold at this point, most stores are so sparse in their detergent selections these days.

Frigilux, are you by chance referring to Cold Water Tide? You really like that stuff, ha?

Scott, Tide Cold Water (powdered version) is the best detergent I've ever used. I've been hoarding boxes of it because I'm afraid they're going to discontinue the powder. The liquid version is also pretty good, but doesn't remove stains as well.

It took me awhile to get used to washing whites in cold water, but now that I've been doing it for a few months, I'm adjusted to it. Nor did I ever think I'd go back to using a powder, having used Tide HE Liquid for several years.

I picked up a box of Tide Coldwater powder a couple months ago. Wal-Mart only carried a larger size ($12.99?), but I found a smaller box at the local grocery. I don't know if Wal-Mart still carries the powder, and I haven't looked again at the grocery. It does work well, but I still use a warm EcoActive wash (with the usual F&P cold deep wash). Since it's (presumably) quite strong, I've used it only on whites/towels, not on jeans or casuals. The box is almost used-up and I haven't gotten more as I have plenty choices of other detergents (Foca, Roma, Ariel, Ace, and Fresh Start courtesy of Bryan/WestTexMan).

Granny had a box of Tide/Downy some months ago, but it's not possible to get a detailed opinion from her on it. I asked how she liked that soap, she said "OK."

Tide w/Downey

I have used Tide with Touch of Downey and found it to be good. I would not say that it is the best Tide product on the market. But does a good job with loads of average soil. As far as the softening aspect of the product; I tried it once by itself and the clothes were a bit stiff. So in subsequent loads I used half the softener than I would normally. Seemed to work fine. However, I should mention that I am using a front loader and I am sure that the 2 extra rinses would have gotten rid of the residual softening agent in the clothes. I would guess that with a top loader which normally only gives one deep rinse the results would be different. Hope this information helps.

DADoES-- Consumer Reports found that Tide Cold Water did not work as well in warm water as it did in cold. I use the automatic temp control COLD setting on my Frigi FL'er. As this is winter, our cold water from the tap is refrigerator-cold. In fact, I payed attention last night and found the fill for the wash was about 70% warm and 30% cold.

I've found powdered Tide CW a couple of places. Wal-Mart in Worthington, MN has it, but the Wal-Mart in Mankato, MN (a much larger town) does not. I've also found it at ShopKo, and I buy it there, as I prefer to give WM as little of my business as I can.

Frigilux, I was wondering just how "cold" your cold water is? With your ATC cold it should be about 65-75f. Just right for the Tide Coldwater. How much detergent are you using in your front-load? How is the sudsing?

I'm using the Tide Coldwater liquid. Recently I washed a cotton polyester blend dress shirt that had a large Thousand Island salad dressing stain. I pretreated the stain with the liquid Tide and did the cold water wash......very surprised to see the stain was gone. It just does not seem right!

Also, I'm on the lookout for evidence of scum in the washer, but so far so good. This cold water washing is kinda hard to wrap your mind around. But it seems to work very well so far.

I saw at WM Tide now has their HE and w/Downy in the BIG dispenser bottle. The one with the built in tap. They cost around $17.99 but you can do 78 or something loads with it.

magic clean-- I use the dosage for a medium load, which is marked on the scoop. Sudsing in the wash cycle is perfect, but I have very soft water, so there's some suds in the first two rinses. It's all knocked away by the tiny amount of softener I use for the third rinse. I haven't noticed any stiffness in fabrics or skin sensitivity, so I'm guessing it's rinsing out well.

Yeah, it took me awhile to get used to washing in cold water, especially all the highly stained kitchen towels, etc. But the proof is in the pudding, as they say. If you like the liquid, you should try the powder. It's amazing. I don't pretreat ANYTHING and all the stains come out---except for a Worcestershire sauce stain, which is the only thing it hasn't fully removed.

dont mean to interupt....

in england as you guys will probably know we have a detergent with built in softener called Bold 2 in 1, in my own experience i have found Bold to clean as well as any other detergent on the market, and the softener well it isnt quite as good as a seperate softener but its good enough for me :-),

UK persil have also introduced Comfort Fabric softener into a new range of products called Persil with freshness of comfort, bit obvious I know, but I have used this in powdered form and found it to clean very well and give the lovely lasting fragrance of original Comfort, although this is not designed to soften clothes dont go paticularly stiff.

I used Tide Coldwater last night, on the controlled-cold water temp, for a small load of unmentionables, couple pairs of socks and a couple white t-shirts. Haven't yet examined the results in detail, but a cursory glance looks OK.

TWD

I used it for bit... Liked it at first , but then I noticed a musty smell in the towels. They are in a cabinet so it couldn't be anything other that that. I shipped the bottle to the shop... YUCK. Now Ross has got me hooked on Viva.

tide coldwater temp

I wrote to Tide.com and asked how cold the water could be for Tide Coldwater. The reply was that it could be used in water as cold as 40 degrees....so there is not a need to use ATC according to P&G.
