Hi all!
We brought some TIDE with us from our trip to Fort Lauderdale to see Barbra Streisand and have now tested it - but after we had worn the textiles we got problems with our skin....
Is that more common with that product than with ARIEL for example? We never had that with ARIEL before although both are products from P&G...

Material Safety Data Sheets

I have heard of TIDE causing allergic reactions, but do not have any problem with it myself. As with any other product out there, *and with help from your allergist or other physician/specialist,* find out exactly which chemical compounds you are allergic to. Then look at the company Web site for the product's MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). Best of Success.--Laundry Shark

Hey Ralf!

I too saw Barbra Streisand in Ft Lauderdale back in early Nov. What concert date did you attend? Wasn't she just fabulous!? I still think she is by far the most talented entertainer and singer of our time..

Now as far as Tide, I have heard of people having reactions to the powder, not so much the liquid. Which did you buy? Also, did you add any additives such as bleach, oxy boosters or fabric softener? That could be the culprit as well. Tide makes a very good Free and Clear version in powder and liquid form. You may want to try that next time.

Tide powder

can be very harsh on some peoples' skin. I have a cousin for whom Tide is absolutely forbidden. She's usually not allergic to other household chemicals, unlike a different cousin....

I am, however, somewhat surprised, with your Tide experience because of the (usually) excellent rinsing performance of most European washers. Don't doubt you a bit, Ralf, but I am surprised.

Some versions of Tide are very difficult to rinse away, especially the fragrance. It is not uncommon for the wash water of laundry previously laundered with Tide, but now with another product to be heavily scented with Tide.

Personally the only version of the stuff I find rinses cleanly is the "Pro-Line" stain remover powder, which I use as detergent seeing as it is "HE" rated.

Tide

When I'm in the 'States there are two things I avoid: Tide powder and chlorine bleach.
I find I can cope with Tide HE when the clothes are rinsed several times.
Whatever is in that stuff, it surely isn't good for me.
Makes me look like a Streuselkuchen.
I think it is the scent; it seems almost impossible to get rid of it. The detergent, itself, does one hell of a good job of cleaning.
Of course, when my mum is in Germany, the Persil goes right back into the cupboard, 'cause she reacts the same way to it...

Tide and Barbara Streisand

Poohh....so many answers! Thanx a lot to all of you!
So my answers now one by one:
Laundryshark (hope you do not bite the washing...?): We both do not know any allergies so far - never had them! So it is the first time that we are allergic to a washing powder! I have used so many during my lifetime but that's the first time that I/we react! We stopped it now and got back to ARIEL and all is ok again! I don't go to many doctors as I'm natural healer myself.

Shane: we were in the 2nd concert in Lauderdale! Also met some new people there! Would have loved to meet you! She is really gorgeous! Next Tuesday is her birthday! Don't forget that! smile!
We bought the TIDE with bleach with mountain spring scent and we didn't add any other chemical to it which I normally do when we have really stubborn stains to wash out of table cloths or table napkins. We use OXY bleach mostly - chlorine bleach I use only in a seperate soaking in a bucket or sink.

Lawrence: Good to hear from you here again - told you in another file that all my mails to you came back with mailer-demon! We did use the TIDE only once in a German washer as it overfoams! Used it in my twinnies and the SpeedQueen TL.

Launderess: What seemed to me was that it is the fragrance that caused the reaction as I found the washing rinsed quite well!

Panthera: I like chlorine bleach (DanClorix) and use it quite often though not on washing actually. I've never had problems with that stuff so far but it is the first time I've used an American powder in my life and got problems with it. Persil I've used ages ago for the last time - it foams too much in the spinner in my twinnies so I never used it again - but was used to have washing done with it during my childhood by my mother!

Greetings to all of you - Ralf

We use Tide with bleach liquid now and then. But Persil is our daily driver.
I would use Tide more often, but the rinsability issues get in the way. If we used only a third of the recommended dose of Tide, we would have to run two or three complete wash cycles before the suds would get under control. Even though our WP TL machine only uses 29 gallons per load, that is still a lot of water! And Tide powder is even worse in this area. But I do love the Tide fragerance!
The only true detergent that caused me really bad problems was the "Miracle White" detegerent of the 70's. That had be broken out in hives from head to toe. I wonder what was in it to cause that kind of reaction?

I've just finished my first container of liquid Tide HE that I bought when I got my new Duet HT pair. I haven't had any allergic problems and neither has my partner, it cleans really well, but the washer itself seems to retain a Tide scent which overpowers the "new washer" smell that I wanted to enjoy for a while. I've switched to All this time around since it was on sale but have yet to crack that bottle open.

The only scented liquid Tide version I have is the "Lavender/Rose" and it does the same thing. Dispenser drawer, tub, et all all reek of the stuff. Worse yet the scent rubs off on my ironing board/table and anything else laundry washed in the detergent touches. Even much more worse, laundry subsequent launderings release the fragrance several washes later.

Needless to say the stuff hasn't been used much. *LOL*

I looked and looked for unscented HE and found none. And this particular grocer had a decent selection, something you don't find everywhere you go. I'm going to steer clear of Tide for the time being and try some alternatives.

I too have reactions with TIDE... and only TIDE.

I have not used Tide since the 1960s. It is the only detergent that I cannot tolerate.
Fortunately I have no allergies except elective dermatitis with TIDE and weird reactions to Tylenol PM.
My mother had a horrible reaction with Palmolive dish soap years ago. The doctor "prescribed" IVORY liquid. Ivory too seems to have changed recently to my displeasure.
.... Four out of five doctors surveyed recommended IVORY LIQUID to the housewives that do dishes...

TIDE and IVORY Liquid

So, I've totally stopped TIDE now - and our skin is all ok again! It was the powder TIDE not the liquid one we bought in Lauderdale. Have no other experiences except with WISK powder ages ago, which was fine, too!
Also I have to add that my mate didn't like the smell at all from the beginning - so maybe he doesn't like it because the body is allergic to it and tells you via this way to avoid that stuff!?!

For dish-washing I found out, there's nothing to beat (don't laugh!! It's true!!) SODA (1 heaped tablespoon full per sink of hot water) and in case of grimy and fatty items add also a teasp or tblsp. full of grated BARSOAP!! Rinse with hot clear water - it's amazing! Silver cutlery stays bright, stainless steel stays bright - even the sink stays bright - and glassware is sparkling clear! And it's absolutely environmental friendly, too!! Not to speak of the costs... cheapcheap!!

Have to add that normally we have a dish-washer for regular cleaning but some articles are not dish-washer proof though!

How ironic about Tide Lavender and Rose...

Makes me think of a print ad for Unscented Tide powder circa 1987: It showed someone dropping a cut-glass bottle marked "PARFUM" into a washing machine full of water -- a full bottle of "PARFUM" -- with one question:

"Is there something in your detergent that you don't want?"

LMFAO when I first saw the ad, but in light of the new Tide fragrances, I'm not laugh'n anymore...

In the late 80's there was a movement to eliminate excessive odors like cigarette smoke, perfume and after shave. I guess the pendulum has swung fully the other way.

Laundress:

Of course you aren't running a French bordel français! But with that lavender/rose scented Tide one will have no doubts that a woman resides there! When I smelled that Tide, I had visions of lace, fluffy stuff, and red velvet curtains dancing in my head.
