Hello all, I am looking to replace my set with at least a Maytag washer from the 1980s, hence my username ive always loved the older powerfin machines. I’m looking specifically for rather an A712 or a standard capacity A212 or something around there with the beautiful black gold and chrome control panel.

These machines are very rare, clearly. Does anybody have any tips on where these are most commonly found? They never seem to pop up locally for me, the used appliance stores never seem to have any arriving, it’s like I just cannot find one anywhere. I don’t want to settle for another direct drive ive had 4 in my lifetime and I’m ready for something totally different. If anybody’s got any pointers let me know, I know this seems to be a dumb question but I just cannot find any anywhere and everybody else seems to have great luck finding them all the time.

You may have to piece one together. If you can get a 712 console with all of the wiring still intact, any cabinet from 1980-1993 will work. Any driveline with the pitman transmission, taller tub, and shorter tub braces from 1966-1989 will fit inside the cabinet.

There's a couple of 712 consoles on Ebay but they have been stripped of their wiring, switches, and timer.

I offered the manager of a used appliance store free ads

Plus distributing her business cards to all my customers if she'd think of us when she got a thumper of Filer-flo or non-Whirltag Maytag.
Gotten two from her so far.
Keep looking, keep your hopes up.

Don’t give up.

That’s the main conclusion I have come to. I know exactly how you feel, as I spent 8 years dreaming about getting a set of central-dial Maytags, and I went years with no luck. But about 9 months ago, the stars aligned, the 1978 A-208 and DE-408 I now own popped up on Facebook marketplace for 50 bucks. I thought I’d never get another set, but here I am. Good luck on your search! You’ll find a set eventually.

anybody’s got any pointers let me know,

Craigslist, Facebook Market Place and Estate sales. (try estatesales.net) Check them regularly with a wide search area and be prepared to travel several hours if need be.

You probably in live what is known as vintage washer desert.

In my neck of the woods you can still find them but not as often these days.

You could also lower your sights a little in the meantime and get an orbital trans version that were built up to 2006.

Thank you all, yeah here in Michigan it’s definitely a desert for these types of machines. There are 90s orbital ones all over, not a fan of really anything after 1989 as far as their washers went. I may decide to get a fully loaded newer direct drive Whirlpool set, and continue hunting for the Maytag as a spare and secondary machine to always keep and restore if needed, as they are so incredibly easy to work on I admire every piece of these classic Maytags, it began with my grandmas Maytag laundry center, with the digital controls for washer and dryer and it has the regular small tub but was white not the regular blue, had the sliding lid on the washer with the chrome accents, it was gorgeous and ran beautifully. Wanted the top load washer only version ever since. But yes I will continue on it will come, just figured I’d see if there was anything else I should be aware of in the search to better find one and I’m not going to give up there’s still plenty of them out there for me to own one someday.

I’ve been on the hunt as well lately, as my grandparents’ 75 A107 that I was hoping to have someday recently died and was hauled away without anybody telling me. The 80s machines with the dark control panel aren’t hard to find at all. There always seems to be at least one or two around in any given general area. The center-dial machines of the 70s, like my grandparents’, though, are a different story. They are much less plentiful, and often times you have to look in several different areas around the country before you find one.

Perhaps, but that won't last and they don't come up for sale as often as they did even a few years ago.

I can't remember the last time I saw a decent center dial washer for sale in my area.

I used to see 15-20 80's Maytag machines everyday on craigslist less than 10 years ago. About 4 years ago there was a 2 month dry spell where there wasn't even one single 80's Maytag washer or dryer. Times are changing....

Speaking of changing times, I just recently learned there's a fairly big revival in CRT TV's/Monitors among gamers (no latency in CRT's) and enthusiast of generation Z and younger who fork out as much as $200 for one. I didn't believe it until I did craigslist searches all over the nation. Just a year ago, one forked out cash to recycle one. If you have an unused CRT taking up space, consider selling it.

About 7 years ago I picked up 3 Maytag A712's, two with matching dryers and all well under $100.

One I kept, one went to a friend, the other was parted out.
