I've been using thrift store toaster ovens for the last few years but I'm considering buying a new one for safety reasons.

 

Are there any really good toaster ovens out there? Brands and model numbers would be appreciated.

I recently purchased a Cusinart TOA-60. It's a Toaster/convection oven and air-fryer. So far I have been impressed with the air fryer feature. French fries come out crispy, without oil. Although you can give them a light coating of oil if desired and they'd come out even crispier. And everything cooks much faster than with a regular oven. One down side is the racks and pans are not dishwasher safe. Hand wash only. I've had it for about 2 weeks. So far so good.

Recently bought a Breville Mini Smart Oven.

Works nicely thus far.  Expen$ive.

The selector knob is somewhat "loose."

The baking timer automatically starts countdown upon finishing the auto preheat cycle.  I prefer to preheat a bit longer so have to reset the timer.

Includes a dark porcelain-coated pan which browns biscuits too much. I kept the aluminum pan from my previous Walmart/GE which works better, although it's smaller.

1,800 watts so technically requires a 20amp circuit.

 
I have the full size Breville Smart Oven and I find baking results outstanding.  I've hade mine for about 7-9 years.  Not a problem.  I'm pleased with the toasting function too.

I'll take a look at the Breville because I keep hearing how great their smalls are. My thinking is more in line with petek's; I'm looking for something that's more like the compact toaster ovens of yesterday, not the expensive counter-top ovens that seem to be the norm these days.

 

Ideally, I'd love something like those old GE/B&D models with the continuous cleaning insides. Now THAT was a good use of the old flawed catalytic continuous cleaning technology that wasn't so hot with big ovens.
 
The thing I DON'T like about these machines is they are HARD to keep clean.You can't take off the doors to clean them.So the few I have sit in the back shelf of the closet.Use a regular toaster and oven instead-esp my Advantium.

Yes I have one.. I bought this one for my mother 9 or 10 years ago now and she loved it and used it daily for toast and cooking her fish . That's saying something because my mother was NOT a gadget person but she loved this little oven. When she went into the home 5 years ago I kept it... it's a little scruffy looking now around the edges but it still works fabulously..

I don't think there's a toaster oven out there than can make two even four slices of toast as fast as this thing can... it heats up instantly so you don't have to preheat or anything...

Soon as it quits I'm getting another.. it's well worth the $100 bucks or so imo.

I purchased a black and decker toaster oven a few years back. Stainless on the outside. Don't use it that often but it works well. The difference I have noticed on this is that they only put one radiant tube on the bottom and one on the top. All the others that I have had previously had two on the bottom and two on the top. We use a regular 4 slice toaster for bread instead. This is mainly for reheating pizza and small leftovers.

Good heavens, I still have my 1975 GE toaster oven with the second rack to do two TV dinners at once and the little lever on the side to tip the toaster rack to make it all slide out if you could not reach in.  It is rarely used anymore, just dusted, but back before microwaves, it got used a lot.  GE sure was an innovator in those days.
 
p<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="color: #000000;">etek - thanks for the Panasonic review.  It's the "instant heat" with no pre-heating that is primary appeal of this.  Looks like they are well made if yours has lasted that long with regular use.  Probably worth the money if that's the case.

I have a GE Versatronic that I have been using since 1980, best $100.00 spent for a toaster oven the liner is removable and the so are the door and back, all dishwasher safe. Rack has two positions and a sensor. I never broil in it knowing the mess it would create.
 
That is a great review and those pictures of those sausages look great.

 

We got a microwave oven in 1978 (when I was 10) and I've been eating un-browned, un-crispy mush ever since.  Now I'm so used to it I don't know anything better!

 

 

 
 
the Breville Smart Oven has a substantial 20 x 16 inch (50 x 40 cm) footprint. For me it's a great reliever oven to my 30 inch/75 cm gas range oven. Heats up in a few minutes, and less wasteful than the range oven for smaller jobs. It's large enough to hold standard sized cookware, such as a 13 x 9 pan, 13 inch pizza pan, or 10 inch pie pan. I've baked 10 inch pecan pies in it, and thanks to convection, they cook as evenly as in a large oven.

If/when the oven dies, I'd replace it with the current Smart Oven Pro (had not been released when I bought my base model), which adds an interior light and 12 hour slow cook function (my model's cook time is two hours max).
 
I was lucky enough to find a NIB Montgomery Wards (Proctor-Silex) toaster oven last year and absolutely love it. But for current market appliances, I'll throw in another vote for Breville or Cuisinart.
