Toaster Oven recommendations?

I've been using vintage, used GE and Black and Decker toaster ovens which I like a lot for the last couple of decades. I like the ones that have the continuous cleaning coating for their interiors--a feature that was a failure in large range ovens but works well enough in the small toaster ovens which are a bitch to clean because they're small and have lots of parts that break easily.

My most recent one shorted out and I'm considering buying a new (EGAD!!) one. A buddy of mine is nuts about Breville products and is directing me to buy one but they are expensive and I thought I would ask my fellow members what they think about current products available. As usual, any advice will be appreciated.

Consumer reports rates a Hamilton Beach model that makes pop up toast high. GE toaster ovens turned into Black and Decker models that rate well too.

I've had a Breville Mini for 7+ years. Works nicely for my needs.

Panasonic FlashXpress. Cooks with near and far infrared. Makes great toast. Reheats pizza without making it rubbery.

That one pictured got me through college, grad school, ....until it shorted out a couple years ago itself. Made it to 43 years. The fayke woode graine peeled in exactly that same corner, even!

I'm still using my 2007 Black & Decker toaster oven, which still works fine.
I mainly use it for the oven, to heat up stuff like frozen potato wedges or puffs.
Maybe some garlic bread slices.
This way I don't have to heat up the stove oven for such a small portion.

Breville which makes great stuff have a bad reliability problem reported to Consumers Reports. Not sure if the toaster oven is bad but see if you find CR reviews .

No, for awhile while CR gives their products a great review, function wise, the consumers reliability surveys shows poor reliability. But, I am not sure about the toaster oven. It could be good. Other Beville products I looked at had reliability issues. So I did not buy them. The toaster oven, the OP would have to find the review.

I did some earlier shopping research on toaster-ovens a while back, and also saw some negative reviews from customers, but they were from several brands, all made in china.
So I'm keeping my old B&D toaster oven.

I bought my mother that Panasonic FlashXpress oven probably 15 years ago and she loved it. I have it now and we really like it. There's actually a new version of it out now with a dial instead of buttons.

Thanks to you all for the information. As it happens, I found another Black and Decker toaster oven at a thrift store for 11 dollars. We'll see how well it does. The Breville Mini looks interesting although expensive.

We had a Toastmaster chrome two-slice toaster in my childhood home that seemed to last forever. I miss those rounded Fifties style models. When I worked at Elgot onv71st Streetvin the late seventies all the fancy uptown people loved those Sunbeam chrome models that automatically lowered the raw bread into its maw and then gently popped it up when done. Wish new ones of those were still around.

Panasonic is known for their well built products including their TV and audio stuff.

While these have electronics in them, overall they are built to last and provide excellent results. I still have mine now going on 10+ years that I use almost every day. No offense to anyone here but I have never had a vintage toaster last 10 years with daily use.

To me a toaster oven is a small thing, about the size of a shoe box at most. Bigger than that it's a counter top oven.

Pete, I agree. A lot of the new ones are just too big for my kitchen. I have an accessory Farberware portable oven (unbelievably good) and a vintage Roto-Broil rotisserie/broiler, but I put them away after use because they take up too much counter.

Those older GE and black and decker toaster ovens were very good durable appliances

They’re not easy to fix heating elements and other electrical connections are welded together, don’t know if you can get any parts for them either, when you can get a nice used one for $11 you’re better off just pitching the old one in the metal recycling bin and finding another one.

Which is what I'm doing.

I am, however, taking a couple of broken ones and assorted parts to a wonderful, old-fashioned repair shop in New Haven called Myer's Electric. I'm hoping maybe the owner, Spencer could cobble one together for me. I do so appreciate those continuous cleaning oven cavities and the controls on the old ones were SO much simpler.

Are they (Breville) f**king kidding????? You have to pay 159 for a toaster oven and then you have to pay extra for the rack and the pan????

It looks like a top-notch SMALL appliance but, no thank you; I'll wait for it to come out on disk.

Yeah, I paid $39.95 back in 2006 for my B&D toaster oven which came with the rack and pan.
And it still works fine.

You get what you pay for. Durable electronics, precision build and well thought out engineering. The price is IMO worth it because they last and last and last.

A rack and enamel pan were included with my BOV450XL. The details at the link above to Breville indicates those items are still included.

I wish Breville offered an EM version of their toaster. That would the amazing, analog + durability + build quality.

I think the Chinese have enough of our money you can easily get a good used toaster oven at a thrift store.

No $150-$350 toaster ovens for me
