Black "Button" on Lid.
The top of the Gyrator has a diaphragm. When the washer fills the Gyrator Cap rises due to the air pressure in the Gyrator column raising the cap to press the button. Inside the lid, there is an adjustable mechanism with Mercury switches or switch for the water level.
When the Cap rises to press the Black Button, the machine begins to agitate.
I believe it also serves as the "Safety Don't you dare watch the cycle" cut off.

I think the black horizontal tab below the water level on the lid was the unbalance safety switch? Did these continue in production to use the wringer agitator? Was the double spin tub discontinued when the wringer agitator was used? 101P, does that mean pump? Did the double tub come without a pump also to be used with a floor drain? I wonder if this the machine was the bridge from the amp machines to the highlander and washpower machines? Cool one piece top much like the Kenmore frog eye. Thank you. alr

The only AM to use the narrow post Gyrator was the A4MP which had timed fill. All of the other AM series washers had either the float in the barrel of the Gyrator or the metal cap over the pressure diaphragm to meter the fill.
