Jaune, here is the promo (part of ad, anyway) for electric drying as you can see. I felt like one was around somewhere-cool machines, these are really beautiful. David

David they are nice.

We had westy spacemates in the early 60's electric drying of course. Did westy have gas fired dryers in the beginning or were they "total electric living" oriented? Thanks arthur.

Hi Arthur

I think at the time that Westinghouse only offered electric dryers in that time period your family had those. BTW those spacemates were cool-were they stacked or undercounter? I remember a family down the street had stacked ones in yellow which matched the rest of their Westinghouse electric kitchen. The gas dryers I don't believe came out until a few years later - 1963 or 64. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.David

David Westy trivia.

They were stacked a set shows up on POD ours were white, They were almost new and came with a home my parents purchased in 1958. I guess they were about a year old. This set had the dryer flipped upside down when it was stacked. You turned it right side up and flipped the chrome panels so the "words westinghouse and clothes dryer were right side up, you also flipped the timer knob so "off" would be Up. (if you planned to use it side by side). The Laundromat died out in the late 60's, and was replaced with a T/L maytag, the westy dryer was "turned right side up" and lasted until the late 70's, Todays POD, mentions it dries at 163 degrees, IIRC. I can tell you that glass window got Very Hot in ours. When the laundromat worked they were true mates capacity wise, after the dryer was paired with the maytag it seemed small. arthur

Now that you mention it...

I remember those dryers upside down. Must not have hurt the innerds. I can also remember the window getting hot. A lady who kept us during the week had a big family and those ground level Westy twins. Enjoying the dryer was only rivaled by the laundromat. God I thought those were the coolest machines and hers were also in yellow. What a great entertainment center for the kids! Thanks Arthur-David

electric drying

As was mentioned, I suspect this ad wasn't a "rivalry" between gas and since Westinghouse didn't have gas dryers at the time. Note that the tone isn't "gas vs. electricity", it just notes that it's electric. The ads for gas shout "Gas is better!" What I'm saying is that I haven't seen an ad with the same tone that shouts "electricity is better!"

Re: Westinghouse Spacemates Pix/Photo's:

Doesn't someone have either some Magazine Photo's or actual Picture's of a Westinghouse Spacemate Stacked Set? I wanting to see the ones as mentioned in the Thread Posting, mentioning about the Dryer being turned "Up-Side-Down" to enable Stacking.

It sounded like in the first Thread Posting that David had some Photo's of them, talking to Jaune in that Thread listing, but I'm not seeing a reference Link to share.

I would appreciate any and all available Photo's/Pix's...

Peace and Happy Laundry Days, Steve

Gold Medallion Homes

There were ads that touted "Clean, Flameless Electric Living" that showed electric appliance use all through the house - cooking in the kitchen, heating/cooling, laundry, etc. Here is one on ebay for electric heating, there were others that extended several pages of pictures & stories of families living better with electricity. Given that a lot of people were building new homes (or remodeling) and had lived with oil, coal, etc. the "clean" aspect of electric homes was very appealing. I had an aunt & uncle in Minnesota that had an all electric home with a gold medallion near the front door/doorbell that I just thought was too cool.

When I was in high school(in the 80's), I dated a girl whose parents had that same seal on thier front door. The house was a 60's ranch, and very modern for the time.

Gas vs electricity ads

"There were ads that touted "Clean, Flameless Electric Living" that showed electric appliance use all through the house - cooking in the kitchen, heating/cooling, laundry, etc."

But still, those were "general" ads that promoted electricity overall and not tied to a specific manufacturer like Norge or other manufacturers. See what I mean? No ads like that from Norge or other manufacturers that touted electricity over gas in the same tone with their specific product.

Medallions

I collect these and have a "Medallion" door bell button at the front door, and a brass 3" medallion at the door to my Garage. I also have a GE Medallion home sign in the garage, and some extra brass medallions.

The holy grails for me are a large medallion (over 1 foot in diameter) and banner. I know these exist as Jimmy found some at an antique swap meet here in CA a few years ago.

We lived in a house with a "Housepower" medallion as well--the entire development (1960) outside of St. Louis had them--in that area it wasn't all electric per se but it was electric cooking/laundry, plenty of circuits, and some interesting built-in nightlights which were kind of kewl

The house across the street form us aws a Medallion house, built spring 1961. Had sea foam Westing house appliances and also had the new-fangled heat pump. And as mentioned above, there was gas--outlet for the dryer, log starter for fireplace, as well as gas lights on the front by the street and for the patio. The original cooktop & nutone hood are still there.
