Sorting the appropriate laundry is always the best way to get the best results. I think things have gone way too far with capacity issues on washers and dryers. Size matters in the bedroom more than the laundry room.
My mom was an expert sorter. Towels, even dark ones were never washed with sweaters or knit clothing or even cotton shirts, too linty. Sheets were to be done seperatley, mostly they could be hung out on the line, and they were a different fabric care setting.
Underwear loads were done with towels(white) with bleach.
I have found that it is stupid to have a ginormous mixed load of laundry, nothing seems to come out right. Linty socks stuck to staticky sheets with grey towel lint all over.
Sorting by fabric type and color is important too. And when you do that you come up with smaller loads.
The Maytag Halo of heat does a great job on an average to a large load, but would never handle the super capacity of today's top loaders, and frankly, clothing should not be dried that way. There is a difference between what you wear on your body and what your towels and washcloths need in terms of laundry, and there are all kinds of settings for these.
I think the industry is becoming size queens about capacity on laundry. Every household member has a different laundry need. When I was 13, my mother said" Grab your lanundry basket, come down cellar, Momma wants to show you how to do your laundry" She worked, had four kids and did not have time to take care of our every laundry need. We still use the Maytag washer of that era.
Some housewives(if there are any left) are anal retentive about others doing laundry.
If I didn't have the initial training, I would still be washing cotton towels with black wool socks.
Mega loads may save energy, but your clothes will look like crap. Laundry is an art, when done correctly. You don't need a sledgehammer to drive in a tack just to wash a few nice garments. And forget about doing comforters at home. King size ones? How stupid.
