too much foam

My Maytag Quiet Series 300 has recently had a lot of foam in the bottom of the tub at the end of a cycle. Also, during the last 5 minutes of the final rinse, the machine sounds like it is laboring heavily to move this foam through the wash system. I've checked during the rest of the cycle and the foam is not present except during the last five minutes or so of the final rinse. Am I using too much detergent? Not enough? Too much rinse agent? Not enough? Detergent is Finish powder and rinse agent is JetDry for the most part. Sometimes have used Cascade powder or Finish PowerTabs, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. The foam is still there.....

Observation

Based on the information that you have provided, I would say the JetDry is being over dispensed.

and I was almost certain that was the issue, but just needed some confirming opinions from all of the experts here. I've turned the knob to minimum some time ago, but the foam still is there. I think I will let the dispenser go "dry" and see what happens. I'm not going to pay a service call for something that minor. I'll just stop using rinse agent (and I know that the owner's guide says it is required now in the low water use machines, but I think I'll take my chances).

need rinse aid if it's in the finish powerball?

I took a sample of some kind of new Finish Quantum (it said with less harsh chemicals, and it worked great. The regular Finish Quantum foamed terribly in my dishwasher, but there was no foam ever left after the cycle was over. But, during the wash I could hear the dishwasher struggle.

Try using a turkey baster to clear the dispenser ... siphon out the rinse aid, flush it with water.

removing rinse agent

I couldn't use a turkey baster as the opening for the rinse agent is a tiny slit, not the hole that most dishwashers have. However, I did use a shop vac and pulled the rinse agent out and then flushed it twice with water. Will post update later this evening. I am having a group of people in for dinner and will definitely be using the dishwasher afterwards (probably my basement machine, too.)

It'll be the rinse aid dispenser not resealing itself properly when it activates its release mechanism.

Mine, a 10 year old Bosch Logixx, started doing the same thing. I managed to fix it myself. It turned out to be the plastic lever See-Saw assembly was sticking a little on its pivot points, preventing the return spring from achieving full tension.
