"Top rack only" & the reverse rack

Ahh yes, the one weakness of the venerable reverse rack, where to put top rack only items? I find too rack only items are rather annoying in size and load-ability. Tupperware for instance, better suited on a top rack due to its small size and awkward shape, but now it can take valuable space on the top rack of a Maytag.

Anyone else run in to, or think about this issue?

The original and first Maytag Jet-Clean dishwasher was the WP-600. It was a top-loading model and had, in my opinion, the best racking system of any dishwasher for a long time. Although you had to move one of the halves of the top rack to access the bottom rack both the top and bottom racks could accommodate almost anything.

 

The front-loading Jet cleans were similar but more limited until the 80's when the more expensive models had rows of tines on the top rack that could be folded down to accommodate glasses and large items like bowls and large pieces. But even the ones with non-adjustable tines could accommodate glasses, cups and other odd items. If I had to have only one dishwasher, it would be one of these.

The folding tynes make the machines insanely versatile. I put a MOL DD reverse rack at my girlfriends place and it had no folding tynes, but my knock off WU1000 Jenn-Air has them.

Where there is a will there is a way

From the other night. I've had this machine for a few months now as a daily driver. I found it awkward at first but now that I'm used to it I really like it. There are however a few spots where really dirty things don't get clean. It's mostly just behind the silverware. Other than that it's the noisiest machine I've ever had but for the most part I like it.

Full disclosure though I still load up the KDS 17a about once a week. You just can't beat the sounds of a one arm wonder. And they clean like crazy!!

RR as daily driver

I have a Reverse Rack Maytag that I've had as my daily driver since the end of June that I love (the Bosch is in storage in the basement)! After some practice I've found I can fit quite a lot stuff in this dishwasher.

The upper rack that came with mine originally had the fold down tines up top but was rusting badly. I found a rack from a lower end model on ebay that didn't have the fold down tines. I thought it might hamper loading but actually have found the opposite to be true. Because they don't move I can sort of "lock" things in so to speak. Plastic containers and small items don't blow around.

As for plastic-ware in the bottom rack; I have loaded those in the bottom but shut the Power Dry off and not had a problem with melting or deforming.

Here are some pics from a load I washed after Sunday dinner a few weeks ago. Everything came clean and shiny with the exception of the baking sheet on the right side of the upper rack; the stuff was too burned on.

<span style="font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif;">I use them on every load and I regularly put plastics in the bottom and never had a problem.  I suspect because of the fan blowing the air around it keeps the plastics from getting baked.</span>

Non-baked plastics...

Could very well be; I may try it with a sturdy piece of plastic on one of my next loads and see what happens.
