About 2 years ago, I purchased a Maytag MVW7232HW1 top load washer. Two years later, the machine now sounds like a jet engine during the spin cycle. I contacted the technician and they told me it needs a transmission which they said would be $600 for them to repair. It’s 2 years old, so of course it’s out of warranty.

It does have a 10 year warranty, but ONLY on the motor and wash basket, not on the transmission. We can’t just change the bearings because they are sealed in the transmission. What a poor design, if the bearings were serviceable I could easily just buy a cheap bearing and fix my machine. I expected Maytag to be better. The old Maytags were some of the best units ever.

Whirlpool owns Maytag now, so that means the Whirlpool washing machines are the same thing just with a different name. I hear about Whirlpool washers that are constantly draining due to bad motherboards as well. Whirlpool and Maytag aren’t like what they used to be.

Bearing failure on a two year-old Maytag top load washer

If you contact Maytag and give them the model and serial number and purchase date, they may provide a free part for you.

Also consider if you bought the machine with a major credit card they usually will cover repairs for a second year, or if it came from a good retailer like Costco they will often cover a product like this.

Also, if you’re handy enough to put bearings in, it’s not that hard to put the whole transmission in the transmissions about $300. It’s part number W11449841.

This type of failure can be caused by using poor quality detergent or too little detergent, coupled with very hard water sometimes the resulting buildup in the outer tub will ruin the seal, which is what causes water to get into the bearings. It has nothing to do with how heavy the loads were.

Good luck it certainly a very unusual failure in the machine so new as a service company. We’ve only replaced one of these transmissions over the past five years but when you consider whirlpool building 20,000 of these a day, there’s obviously gonna be one that fails way too soon.
