When opening a transmission for service, what's the best choice for sealing it on reassembly?  I've read/heard recommendation to use a product such as Permatex Blue RTV Silicone Gasket Maker.  Or is cutting a new gasket of cork a better choice?

Transmission Gaskets

If the cover was glued on originally such as a WP DD transmission differently reassemble it the same way, the thickness of a gasket will cause the cover to bend and could cause aliment problems.

On WP BD and older MT Pittman style transmissions these transmissions originally used cork gaskets but the manufactures both switched to paper gaskets LONG ago and the paper gaskets worked a lot better.

Cork would usually be my last choice and probably the poorest performing material as well, there are so many other good gasket materials out there if you have to make your own.

Allrightythen, thanks!

I also found a video on YouTube of a repair guy doing a neutral drain kit.  He changes the oil, and uses Permatex Ultra Black (which says "maximum oil resistance").  I bought Permatex RTV yesterday but can exchange it for the Ultra Black.

Hi Glenn ~

I swear by the Miracle Blue Goo; it works like Magic. Follow the cure length instructions--as if you would not, (ironic smile).

RE: Email queries.

Permatex Blue RTV Silicone Gasket Maker * IS * Miracle Blue Goo. One and the same. Just the nick name I've called it for decades. I'm sure it comes in many brands, but they all look and smell and seal the same--flawlessly. Excuse the confusion--must have had too big a sniff!
