Do you trash compactors users leave you compactor's ram "down" till the next time you use it? I do, one night a friend of mine had to spend the night cuz he drank too much, me too, and all of the beer bottles I put in the compactor. Some broke, but some didn't. I left the ram down overnight and one of the bottles poped in the middle of the night. It sounded like a gun shot and totally scared the hell out of my friend, Devin. Ha, ha. mayby that's why he dosen't spend the night on my couch anymore. Too funny....Bill in Az....

I leave it that way on "extra pac" once it's about half full. It really does make a difference in how much you can fill a bag. And yes, we've had the same thing happen with bottles popping in the middle of the night.

Makes sense to leave the ram down-some materials "rexpand" after compacting-plastics esp.some plastics are somewhat eleastic and can "uncompact" when the ram force is removed.Thats why balers and compactors for plastics use have several ram cycles and leave their rams down or closed.

Definitely worth it if you live in a rural area where there is no conventional refuse collection and you have to haul your own stuff to the transfer station or landfill. Compost all your wet yucky stuff or put it down the disposall, separate your recyclables, and toss everything else in the compactor. That should let you get away with going to the transfer station only once a month or less.

Otherwise, it could also be worthwhile if you live in an area where the city provides your bins, and you need more capacity than the city bins have, or if you don't like going outside to empty the kitchen bin in the cold winter or hot summer.

Leaving the ram down might also be useful for keeping pesky mice out of what might otherwise be a major feast.

Crush Me Baby

I love compactors. It's an appliance for God Sake!
With four kids, tons of company and always catering or testing new products I could be the reason there is so much waste in our land fills.
I loved to hear them groan and squash. If they would'nt crush glass, then they weren't plugworthy in my house.
The Kenmores with extra pack could occasionally break glass if you left the ram down.
My history of compactors in order of houses and states. were
ISE, GE,O'keiffe&Merrit, Kenmore, Kenmore, Kenmore, Whirlpool, Braun, GE, Kenmore, Braun and GE.
I learned that the smaller the chamber the greater the ram effect. (run with that boys) Braun was 12 inche, Most were 14 and Kitchenaid was 16.
I always wanted a Kitchenaid with the hamper door but didn't have the chance and history proved the best performance and least service came from Braun, which was also sold as GE in later years.
Compactors are of less and less value as we sort, move, wash, store and f&$k with a garbage everywhere. Its called recycling.

compactor price

Hi, Toggle. You can get compactors used at appliance stores. The older ones are much heaver and built better than the new ones today. I got my KA compactor with the "Litter-bin" door. You can watch it smash with the little door open. Then I found a WK Royal compactor. You can watch it smash also with a flashlight held sidesways with the door closed. The KA one was $100.00 and the WK was $5.00.....Bill in Az....

I would like to get a used or garage sale one to play around with.--Its garage sale day-when I get off my shift-on the way home can hunt the garage sales. You could get a built in one to watch-just keep clear of the machinery while it works-since its not in the cabinet.I guess it can keep my Fellows paper shredder and disposers company---Time to feed the "creatures"!!!

Smaller is Better

Toggles,

After years of owning, buying, repairing and throwing compactors away, there are as valuable to me as a washing machine.
The narrower bin means more ram from the same design and motor applied in a smaller space. More crushing bravado as it were.

Braun originally marketed them and later it was branded GE

Early GE and frigidaire were round. I also had a round one with a Gaffers and Sattler brand so I am clueless who the manufacturer was. I was told by a repairman the round ones were harder to fix and had 14 diagnostic points. That was the end of my first compactor.

I use them regularly with NO regard, and replace them every 3-5 years. The cost of doing business.
