I have a vintage air conditioner . It is what I refer to as a console or floor type air conditioner. It has the name Tropicaire on the front ,and a brass tag on the back that indicates it was manufactured by Ace Manufacturing, with an address of Chicago 8 Illinois. There is no model or serial number that I have found. The unit is housed in a solid wood cabinet, with a layer of veener . It sets in the floor and has a metal duct that goes thru the window . It runs off 220 volts. I used this unit for a number of years in the home I used to live in ,and it ran great. It has been in storage for at least the last 10 or 12 years. I recently moved it to my current home in a storage building I recently built. I was wondering if anyone has heard of a unit like this ,or heard of Ace Manufacturing Company . I can furnish photos if needed.

tropicaire

retroman:Will try to get you some pics .kimball455: that link was interesting. there were some old ads that had a couple of units that slightly resemble the unit I have.

The first home AC units were made to look like the cabinet radios of the time. Most of them, especially the very first models, required a water hook up and drain line return to cool the compressor. If you check the bottom of the console, you may find the fittings for a water hook-up.

Tropic-Aire

And from what I can tell, Tropic-aire made add-on heater systems for cars in the 1920s/30s. They used the same principle we know today of circulating hot coolant and using an electric fan to blow hot air. Hence the name "Tropic".
