snapper fan and owner here..

I bought a new snapper self prop(6 speed) in May of '98. Love it! the only problem I had, was shortly after I bought it new, the carborater had to be replaced(kept flooding it self and wouldn't start after it had been ran)It still was under warrenty. I get the blade sharpened, oil changed, and new air filter every year. I did relplace the bag 2 yrs ago. Other than that, I can't complain. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.

Kevin--- We have the same TOL mower, except mine is now 3 years old and doesn't have the cupholder (damn!). Mine has been very reliable and as long as you don't turn the mower on its left side (allowing oil to get into the air filter/muffler) you shouldn't have any problems.

I used to turn my old mower on its side to spray off any accumulated grass gunk underneath the deck; did the same with my new Snapper and found it started to run roughly, was hard to start (even with the electric ignition) and would stall in areas of tall, thick grass. Oil was getting into the filter. Now I just tip it up at a 45-degree angle and spray it out. No problems!

It's nice, I'll have to take a look at them when the time comes if'n there's a dealer here. I like how you say the bag releases and replaces easily without a lot of jimmying and contortions.
BTW does it have a mulching mode? Not that I would mulch the clippings because my lawn tractor had that but I found if you didn't keep the grass cut continually and it got too long you ended up with a mess if you tried to mulch it.

We just bought the same machine on 08/29/06. Has been nothing but the best. Ours has the Kawasaki engine, not the briggs engine. We really like the machine. Take care of it, and it will go a long time.

A few responses...

Frigilux, on turning the mower over, the dealer instructed me as follows.

You can always tip the engine so the "spark plub is up in the air", which for most of these mowers, is the push handle straight down. This is what I did to clean out the wet grass.

Also, he indicated to me that for an oil change, you can tip the mower to its left (if you were facing the pushbar) and drain the oil out the top. I would suppose the other direction is the problematic one.

Pete, mulching...I believe when I saw this on the website it said it can "convert to mulching mode". I will have to double check what that means in the manual, which I have not read yet! Also Pete, on the bag, not only does it lift straight up, but the whole back of it just flips open, it is held closed by pressure and a hook when on the mower. On every mower I have had, you either had a zipper or some other clasp mechanism that was difficult to use, or in the case of the Yard Machines, you had to shake the grass out of the entrance hole. This would require a major hassle to get the grass out, especially if you were shaking it into a tall trash container...can't imagine doing it into a lawn/leaf bag.

I remember my dad's old mower had this fiberglass shell of a bag...don't ask me how it "breathed" but anyways, although it seemed ungainly, the whole thing just clamshelled open and all the grass immediatly dumped out. It's amazing that it has taken all these years for someone to once again develop a good bag mechanism!
