Not sure if this should go here or in the "Super" category, but I'm preparing for a kitchen remodel and I want turquoise appliances. Does anyone have any experience with electrostatic painting? My stove and dishwasher are both too new to replace. I do need a new refrigerator and my idea is to have them painted. Any thoughts/comments appreciated.

Hi Mark

Welcome to the club!
My experience with electrostatic wasn't a pleasant one. Not to say that it can't be done and look good. If I were you I would paint the fridge and dishwasher conventional and have the stove powder coated. If you do that have the stove done first, then match the color for the fridge and dishwasher from the stove. Your limited on powder color.

I agree, I'll not do the electrostatic thing again either. I thought it was too heavy of a paint coat all at one time (runs and dribbles) and I asked for bright white, but ended up with a more of an off-white. I paid very little for it so I don't care, but next time will have it done at a body shop for a true professional look. If you can find the pics of RickR's Kenmores, they are a very good example of how good it can get.

1965 Kenmores

These two,and others I have, were painted at an auto body shop my a friend of mine. He used automotive grade paint, and they always turn out awesome! He has my 1958 pink Maytag set now,and I should be getting those back before too long.
Good Luck,
Rick

Of dryer. These Kenmores were dismantled to the last nut and bolt. Nothing had to be "masked" at all. That is the only way to paint appliances,IMO.

Rick, I may have asked you this before....

Did you basically supply him just the loose lid and outside "shell" to paint?

found another pix

Hey there Kevin!! These were taken in 1993. I had just finished these, and they were still out in the garage. The cabinets are all that go to the body shop. The mechanisms stay behind with me for a rebuild in the meantime.

Sounds like this will be an interesting and fun experience. A fresh professional paint job will look great.
Turning new technology into a flash back it's like the best of both worlds.

Wow Rick, I didn't realize you had the turquoise Kenmores that long!

I had been wondering what you washed with after the Orbital Maytag was gone...

Hi Austin!
I got the 61 Whirlpool in March of 2003,and had it finished in April of 2003.That was the first classic used, after selling the Maytag. I found the Kenmores in April of 2003,and had them finished at the end of June of 2003.The Filter-Flo came along about the same time the Kenmores were finished also. It was a busy Summer that year. Seems like it was a long time ago,but that is only two years.Time flys when you are having fun!! (:

Oooops! You are correct Austin. My mistake. After you have seen five decades, they tend to get mixed up... LOL!

I guess my main concern here is with the stove. What's best to stand up to the heat of the oven? I cook a lot.

Hi Darrel,
Yes the tops have been repainted also. They were scratched and faded beyond saving. No rust anywhere however. The tops were media blasted to remove what was left of the porcelain enamel. Then they were treated with an acid primer, paint primer, and then the paint. The cabinets were sanded, primed and painted. The paint is very tough and scratch resistant, and with care will last a lifetime.

Range Options

I've seen a turquoise 1959 GE 40-inch range for $3,800 -- completely rebuilt. Rick, the new Northstars on the site you linked me to start at $4,000. Both of those are totally out of my price range and the 40-inch GE, as gorgeous as it is, violates my space limitations.

My guess is that since automotive finishes stand up to the blazing sun, intense engine heat, etc., it should stand up to cooking temperatures -- especially if I keep it protected with Jubilee Kitchen Wax.

Bethann, please tell me more about powder coating.

Thanks!

You can find them for much less $$

Bethann,
Can you please post a photo or two of the turquoise 1956 GE range you purchased a few months back?

Mark: Powder coating is much more durable and heat resistant. It's baked on. It would have to go get sand blasted first. So that means you have to take it apart. But you get great results. I'm sure there is somebody on here that can tell you more in detail than me though.
Rick: I'll post a picture of Emma in the morning. I need to take another one since she's cleaned up now. I just got home from work and I'm beat!

56 GE Liberator

Here's Emma. I had this whole thing typed out and got throw off... so since I'm lazy it's short and sweet! You can find one between free and 600.00. Depends on who has it and what kind of shape that it is in. If you want a certain model, color, and year it's harder to find. Not as hard as washers though! She wasn't to bad. Replaced the burners, fixed the light, minor wiring. Lots of cleaning! She really still isn't as clean as she could be. Now I need to find the matching fridge!

Bethann ... that's a GORGEOUS range!! How great to have it! That work space next to the burners is perfect for raising bread dough. Do you cook a lot?

Hi Geoff! I cook everyday! And for someone that has convinced her husband that she needs four kitchens... I would get my ass kicked if I didn't! LOL! I just can't wait to get them all done so everyone can see them!

Sweet Bethann! My favorite range is a toss up between yours and a GE Stratoliner in the same color. I have been looking for one for years with no luck! Congrats!
