Hello again all,

When I wrote my introductory post a little over a month ago I related the tale of my venerable Whirlpool belt drive. (I've included a link to that thread if you want to revisit the whole thing (and see more pics), but in a nutshell: my 1970 WP BD finally gave up the ghost and I ordered a new Whirlpool front-loader as a replacement, but thanks to the inspiration of AW I decided to also keep and eventually restore my trusty old friend.)

Well, some changes have come to my laundry room since I wrote that first post. The new Duet has arrived (look for a review of it coming soon in the Deluxe forum, as it's a midrange model which does not seem to have been talked about here much)....and when the old LVA480 was shifted out of the way to make room, it revealed a minor mystery!

I'd known for a while that something was off about the color of the cabinet. The model number is LVA4805W0, the W clearly indicating that this machine is white, but the cabinet is closer to an almond color, or perhaps off-white. I assumed that just the original cabinet had been switched out for a different one sometime prior to my ownership, as the top and lid were still colored pure white.

However, when it was moved away from the wall and the rear of the washer exposed to good light, I was intrigued to see that the almond or off-white color did NOT continue around the rear of the cabinet! That back cabinet was the same brighter white as the top and lid.

So now I ask you all: were other WP colors simply sprayed over a white base coat and just on the front and sides, leaving the back of the cabinet white? Or are we looking at someone maybe having repainted part of the cabinet at some juncture?

It sounds like you've been repainted at one point in time before you had the machine. When machines are colored the entire cabinet gets the paint job not just certain sides.

Color shifting.

I've found that the color of paints used on many appliances can shift over time as the pigments deteriorate. The top of your washer is likely fired-on porcelain, which is more stable than the paint. The paint has yellowed, the porcelain has not. The cabinet of your washer was likely the same color as the top when it was new.

Yes the front and sides of the washer cabinet were probably exposed to sunlight, which yellows the cabinet slightly over the years. The top and lid are porcelain and the glass coating on the top and lid keeps the original color intact as it was the day it left the factory. Many of my vintage machines have a yellowish cabinet and snowy white top.

Gas appliances or pilot lights nearby ----

will also cause yellowing.
I use a three-step process whenever I bring in a machine.
1. Scrub-down with wet SOS scouring pad. Wipe off excess and dry.
2. Wipe-down with undiluted Clorox Clean-Up. Let stand a few minutes and then wipe dry. Don't allow it to "run"!
3. Rub-down with Meguire's Cleaner Wax Paste. Buff well.

You will end up with a great finished look.

Just like Robert, many of my appliances are two-tone white in color because they are not all-porcelain.

Interesting!

I had ruled out fading/yellowing because the top was still white....I hadn't considered that they might be different materials!

The cabinet does have a lot of scratches so I will probably need to repaint it. Then at least for a while the whole thing will be the same shade of white again :)
