Refreshing in Central Minnesota ... Where's the Snow?

Hi all ...

We have almost the same weather as Robert in Minneapolis; we run a little colder sometimes.

The ride in to work this morning was +5 above zero. We had windchills of -5 to -10. Brrr! This is more like January/February weather.

I'm waiting for the ice to keep forming on a lake in the middle of St. Cloud ... Lake George ... I LOVE to go ice skating and they have a great warming house. It's really relaxing after work to go for a skate; the lake is surrounded by lights and its a lot of fun! :-)

I plugged my car in last night (first time this year ... even though I park in my garage) and had a really quick warm-up this morning. My "bun warmers" (seat heaters) are WONDERFUL and a true luxury!!

COME ON ... BRING US THE SNOW!!!
 
Snickerdoodles

One of the best cookies ever, good for the Holiday or not.

Mix throughly:
1 cup soft butter
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs

Sift & stir in:
2 3/4 cups flour
2 TSP cream of tartar
1 TSP Baking soda
1/2 TSP salt

Roll into balls the size of small walnuts (no comments from you Toggle!!)

Then roll in mixture of:
2 TSP Cinnamon
2 TBSP sugar (baker's sugar is best since it is fine)

Bake at 400 for 8-10 minutes.

These are great size for gifting to others as you can make a ton quickly and they bake fast.
 
Yeah, and they will add a ton to you quickly as well. They are one of those cookies that I can just keep on eating. They do not look dangerous like things with frosting etc and have such a mild, but delicious, flavor.
 
Ah yes bum warmers...you surely miss those once you've had a car with them. I use mine alot on low because I don't like the cabin itself too warm. Unlike the one I live with who cranks the heater as far into the red zone as possible then when it's too hot as far into the blue zone as possible, and back and forth... ggeeeeesh..
 
Love Snickerdoodles but haven't made them. Time to give it a try!

Temp reading of 39°F at my house at 11:30 AM. Now I've heard 28°F predicted tonight. I'll be in short sleeves as usual ... but *maybe* with a light jacket, if I can find it, LOL.

Here in the SF Bay Area the weather forecasters are in hog heaven with the supposed "cold snap" we're having this week. Freeze warnings up for outlying areas. I know better and didn't do much besides move some tender potted plants under a tree. Guess what? They predicted mid 20's to mid 30's and still not a single burnt leaf on any tropical plant in my yard, even the unprotected ones. I checked the thermometer at 6:30 this morning and it read 40. I get so annoyed with these weather people who do things like predict the storm of the century when all we get is a few sprinkles. The weather is pretty boring around here so they jump at the chance to hype anything.
It's only into the low 60's during the day but nice and sunny. I'd be happy to have the situation some have reported here of temps still pushing 90. I love summer and hate winter. In fact I'm heading to LA next week in hopes of catching some warm days there. Usually their coldest winter daytime temps are the same as our warmest up this way, but I've also been stung in Palm Springs the first week of December freezing my buns off at a clothing optional resort so you just never know.

Bob you're right...Ed wouldn't have a clue. Did you see that suit he was wearing last week? Blue jacket, tan pants, a purple print tie and red hankie..I thought the TV color was going out. I think all that coke screwed up his color

I agree Geoff, I'm ready too! Tomorrow is Dec 1, the start of the metrological winter, my most favorite time of year. It runs thru Feb 28. The Astronomical winter runs Dec 21-Mar 21, but this period is not as cold as the period Dec 1-Feb 28.

It's funny how so many of us Minnesotans are gung-ho for the snow and others in places out east seem to hate it. So many people here at work are saying they are ready for the first big snowfall as well as they want to get on their “sleds” by that the mean their snowmobiles. Of course we generally get nice powder snow which is very different from the slushy snow they get to the south and east.
 
Its been poring rain all day and the temps are right at 60 degrees with 100 percent humidity... Ughh. Worse than florida humid here... Supposed to be getting cold soon...

We've always referred to him as "Ed Brainless" for obvious reasons!! LOL He even looks surprised at his forecasts. Me thinks he has a "ghost" meterologist predicting the weather for him.
 
We're all looking to the first big snow here, too. Minnesota is truly a beautiful place to be! We'll have to get our driving habits straightened out again ... it's like riding a bicycle, however. Your first "slip" and you remember! :-)

I work for a commercial construction firm and even the crew members are looking forward to the snow. We "zoomed" to make sure footings/foundations were poured and roofs were on buildings so the "gang" can work inside during the winter months. We've got one building coming in the week of the 18th and the crew will have to be outside for a while; but watch them go!! What a great gang of guys!!

I also believe that if we're gonna have this kind of cold weather, BRING ON THE SNOW! Can't wait to take my walks; go skating; cross-country skiing (a total novice!) and the wonderful foodstuffs that come with the cold weather. That's why you need to walk, skate ... you gotta burn off those goodies. :-)
 
Ok.. It supposed to get cold here... I don't want snow and it not supposed to come here.... We have a Mr. Alphabet as a weather man.... His last name has 18 letters of the alphabet..
 
Yes Venus the one in the same. I'll even give you a bit of history. Ed was catapulted into that position when Troy Dungan moved from Houston to Dallas to go work for WFAA.
 
Oh My! Chicago is supposed to get 10+ inches of snow?

Jim Cantorie, on The Weather Channel, said that chicagians are to possibly expect the worst snow storm in november scince 1978! OH my..... He said there is no school and there will be wide spread power outages.. Oh. Supposed to spread all the way pver to you Robert in St. Paul as well...Shewww...

I dunno if they are making it over blown or what, but i won;t be suprised if it comes this way...
 
YAY for cold weather

The cold front hit here much later than expected...probably around 6:30-7 or so, combined with quite a bit of rain. I thought it would have rushed in overnight like they usually do. Regardless, I really enjoyed today as it was quite cold, windy, and wet (sometimes hard, driving rain is nice) for the first time in a while, and the sun didn't come out until this afternoon. I'm hoping this one will stick around for a while.

Turned the heaters on in the Studio this afternoon as well, so it will be nice and warm when I do laundry tomorrow.

Latest reading is 11:42 PM, 34°F.
 
Our Dallas office closed at 2:00 today due to "inclement weather." WTF was that all about??

It's been in the 60s the last couple of days and the nights have been chilly, in the 40s. It's supposed to be back into the 70s now and I sure am glad of that. Anymore 55 or 60 feels cold to me.

The weather they've been having in Minnesota, and just the thought of snow...YEESH. I can't even process it. I was there WAY longer than I ever should have been, and I'm glad that situation has been corrected! LOL
 
And if you think driving on snow and ice is fun, you should try a landing with a fully loaded 757 in near blizzard conditions. To me weather is just another way to tell me what part of the country I am in at the moment. I often see all four seasons in one day!
Since I am MSP based, I do a lot of flying through the upper Midwest. Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan are all beautiful with all the snow on the ground. Sometimes during the winter months and with a full moon out, the ground looks like a Currier & Ives card. Smoke coming out of the chimneys of lit up farmhouses, the hills where crops usually are covered in snow.....
BTW, here in The Woodlands, the temp is hovering between 33 & 34, according to my weather station.
 
Was at the office in town late tonight, left 2:30 AM. Car thermometer read 39°F when parked in the alley behind the buildings. By the time I drove home across town, it dropped to 33°F. Now I hafta go back to the theater to get something I forgot there.

Temp in the house is 67°F and the heat pump is running. Recovery time from setback on Thu night/Fri morn is 3:00 AM (I think), so it must have triggered an (early) "smart recovery" which is the 1st time I've seen it do that. Either that, or one of the resident mousies got chilled and raised the temp.

Somewhere in the house decendents of Minnie and Micky are nice and warm? LOL! I truly hope that little problem is rectified soon.

We had a 40 degree temp change here yesterday. I'm use to this, happens every year here. I'm amazed at how clueless some folks are, that don't believe the weather changes so rapidly like that. Our favorite saying here: If you don't like the weather, give it 5 mins. and it will change.

Never did get down to freezing here on the south side. We hovered just above it, thank god. I would of had a ton of plants to cover up.
I'm, glad the wind has died down. Talk about a BJ! It was brutal downtown.

This type of weather puts me in more of a Christmassy mood...I just don't get in the spirit of the season with 80 degree weather with 75% humidity. LOL

I am off today, so shopping & lunch with a friend is planned.
We are going to hit the resale shops in Bacliff again...so much fun, because they have better items and more resonable prices than around here.

Everyone stay warm, safe and dry this weekend. I feel for our contingent up north dealing with the wintry blast that is suppose to hit them today.

But I wish I could go ice fishing sometime...LOL Sounds like a blast!

Well, Scott ... my goodness! I thought you were from Minnesota originally; is that incorrect?

I was born and brought up right here in the St. Cloud area. My family moved to Arizona in the mid 1970's when I was about 14-15 yo and I hated it. It just wasn't the same. As soon as I got out of high school, I went to Oregon and lived for almost 15 years in the rain.

It wasn't until I came home about 15-16 years ago that I realized how beautiful Minnesota is. I realize the weather is so cold but I work Monday-Friday from 7:30 - 5:30 or so. I'm so busy that I just "handle it"! :-) The spring, summer and fall are wonderful with lots of gardening and outside activities.

It was +5 again this morning on the way to work; my car warms up really well. You gotta love the plug in in this kind of weather!

I hear Chicago is going to get "popped" today with a foot of snow ... those lucky dogs!! :-) Send some up our way Illinois contingent, OK? :-) I think we're supposed to have "flurries" this weekend ... boring.

I guess its all in what a person can get used to, huh? I admit that sometimes all the shoveling, snowblowing, car warming upping, and all the other things that are difficult to do in the cold, can get to a person. We're usually pretty happy when spring comes ... at least I know I usually am.
 
The weather here in Florida has been great. Yesterday I had to end up turning the AC back on. It got up to 87 and was just beautiful. This morning when I got up it was 75 already. I do love to look at snow but sure don't miss all the dark rainy, messy days that we use to have in Illinois. Jeff I hope that storm misses all of you.
