UK Indesit

Does anyone know about these machines and how reliable they are? I have been looking around the usual places (Curry's Comet etc) and there are a range of about 4 machines from £199.00 upwards. My Mum needs a new washer and dryer set and given that she only uses it 2 or 3 times a week and they are very simple to operate with easy to use/grip dials and clear instructions, these Indesits seem ideal. Any recommendations on low end but reliable machines would be gratefully received.

New Indesit

Hello Hoovermatic,

I used a new Indesit a few weeks ago in Warrington whilst visting my sister in law. It was the 1500 spin one, but I don't remember the model number. It's the current one for sale.

Positives - the door seemed fairly sturdy, the machine washed and deep rinsed well, balanced well and quickly, and once I'd levelled it properly didn't move and the vibration was acceptable. The full speed spin was a success. Good choice of programs and flexible temperature control.

Negatives.....the machine was noisier than alternatives - not in a bad way, the motor just makes more noise. The wash noise was audible throughout a large house, the machine being in a utility room downstairs. Disenser and other console parts a little cheap. Drum felt very thin and tinny, not sure about the quality of the bearings. Have heard numerous reports of computer board failure with Indesit / Ariston.

Alternatives? I would probably opt for Tricity Bendix or a bargain Zanussi at this price level. They are part of the Electrolux company (Zanussi, AEG)which is turning out good machines right now.

Having said that I enjoyed using the Indesit - a fun non nonsense machine which did exactly what I would want from the price. FWIW, The W103 is Britain's most `bought' washing machine.

YES, Indesit better than Ariston...but ElectroluxZanussi the

I can't say anything about Indesit, althouhg my anunt have been owing the first from 1964 since 90s and the second since now. It's a Merloni brand, better of course than Ariston and it may be produced in Polony, but I'm not sure of that.

How would it be beatiful to work for Indesit??? I'd like so much...

My opinion!!

As I work in an appliance shop I wouldnt touch anything with a Merloni connection (ESPECIALLY not Servis or Indesit) with a very long stick lol- well worth spending a bit more on a Zanussi- Electrolux, Thats what I did

We've had our Indesit w123 since September 2002, and apart from one of the inlet valves leaking due to limescale build up (we sorted this by soaking it in vinegar), it has given us no problem at all. I don't thimk Seamus could believe that when he visited!

But my partner is very protective over it. Soda crystals in every wash, and he'll switch it off if the spin becomes unbalanced. although on the other hand, he has put a double duvet through it more than once - which was quite a struggle!

I think a lot of cheaper made models / manufacturers have suffered badly over the past years from the "disposable machine syndrome" it cost so much for repairs that it is cheaper to buy new...I know a few people with Indesit machines , 3-7 years old and all going well, similarly I`ve just seen two Servis 1500 spin silver machines 4 yrs old, move house (without brackets)and continue to wash for families with no repairs...

I think with new EU directives on disposal of appliances and fines for firms with high turnover for non re-cycaling, we are going to see more reliable machines...

When you think that Indesit had many of the first autos over here and look how long most of them lasted, albeit low spins, you just couldnt wear them out...

Yikes, a double quilt in one of those :-O thats a shocker

My nan has a similar model a W93 and she has had only one problem with her's the timer gave up after 2 years of 3 washes a week since then it has been fine, although the tumbling speed and spin pattern is a real let down for it.

Indesit had many of the first autos over here look how long

I am A huge fan of old indesit's having owned 3 of them, i have to say when they were built like that back then they would have given Hoover and maybe even Miele a run for it's money!!

My first Indesit got scrapped due to bad bearings, thse should have been fixed but nevermind.

My Second Indesit a 600spin machine, model number 610W if i remember correctly. It is still going now, my aunt's friend has it its gotta be around 13 years old now and never needed a repair.

My Last Indesit a 1200spin Machine, model number WG1233T with the door handle at the 2o'clock position was the best washer I have ever owned, never failed in the 7 years its been around getting used for about 8 washes a week for the first 3 years and after that about 4 washes a week. This machine is still alive and kicking at my mums friends home.

Indesit really need to improve!!!

Quality of modern machines

In all honesty, I think with Indesit machines you either get good or bad ones - I've said before that I know of 3 people with W93/W123 type Indesit's that have had endless amounts of trouble, but then I also have seen a couple models of the same machines working reliably. However I think that Indesit and other el cheapo brands do suffer from the cheapness and from my experience at least I would advise to stay away from those sorts of brands, but then it is also worth remembering that my mum's Bosch just made it to 3 years before it died, and my mum's Zanussi died under a month so it's not just the cheap and cheerful brands that have the problems.

Dan - I think a lot of older machines, not just Indesit's, could give Miele a run for their money. Seems that nowadays that only a few manufacturers such as Miele or Asko still have passion for build quality & reliability, but the downside is that you have to pay for the quality and you can't expect the privilege of 20 years heavy use from a basic machine like you were able to from buying a Hoover automatic that cost £200 in the 1980s. IMO, even a modern Miele whilst being a very high quality product, still can't beat the engineering of old washers.

Indesit

I've had a few indesits from the past 20 years and they were very robust. Recent years has seen very bad reliabilty from them with bearings failing and the dreaded timer round and round etc etc. i think we are seeing an improvement now and again as Chestermike says with the manufacturers being responsible for the end of life of their machines,they will want them to last a bit longer or they will have a mountain on their hands of duff machines. I have to say that I have other Indesit products and have been impressed with reliability and sturdiness over the past 5 years , but the washers have some way to go yet.

hi, i have had the indesit w123and the only problem i had was the motor wore out quite quick. had it 3 years and had 2 motors in that time, it dont matter now whether you buy ariston, indesit, hotpoint or creda because they are all the same company now as hotpoint sold out to ariston now you are only buying a name, all the parts are the same in all four makes of machine.
i bought my gran a servis washer 4 years ago and she not had anyprobs with it but nowadays its just luck of the draw with new machines.

hi matey it was the armitage both times on em, they just blow and thats it no good. the w123 does do a good wash no probs there but its the motors on em. i have a hotpoint at the minute and ariston/indesit have used the same motor on the model i have now and i am just waiting for that to do the same, a few people i know have had the same problem with em. maybe there is no quality control no more or maybe they just dont care cs they make money on spare.

Thats very interesting about the motors failing on your Indesit. These machines have a pretty much universal motor called the Ceset fitted to them which is fitted to loads of brands of machines not just from the Indesit group. I guess they had a dodgy batch as armature failure is rare or something else was amiss on the machine causing them to fail. It's an interesting problem!

Just wondered if anyone has any old pics of the indesits with the programmer and toggle switches on the top of the machine? The detergent dispenser was on the top also.

for explaining Robbie. Off on holiday in 10 mins but when I have more time I'll tell you all about my sparking Hotpoint which jumped, banged, trashed the door glass and eventually Currys couldn't fix so refunded........

no problems nick, look forward to hearing it. was thinking maybe my machine was done in because i was doing 3-4 loads a day every day, machines dont last long in our house lol i'm trying to find a hotpoint top loader early 90's model as it was first machine and its still going now and the only thing that ever went was the clutch which i now know how to replace. as for your machine bouncing around it sounds like a problem with the dampers. i've had a few doors smash open over the years sounds like some one firing a gun lol
