Mid 50s Universal gas range

These were well built, solid ranges typical of the period there were several brands that were about the equal of these.

We have a lovely older customer who had this range and we finally had to give up on it about two years ago. There’s a new GE gas range there. I’m sure she would love to have this range.

The fatal defect that these ranges had was the pilot lights were next to each of the cast iron burners, and it would be erode iron away so badly that there was a huge hole in the side of all, but one of the burners so the flame was very uneven. On a similar range I once had a welder try to weld the holes closed and that worked somewhat well, but it was just too much time and investment. Also, several of her burner grates had cracked or broken completely. I guess it’s been turned into a new Hyundai by now, we sent it to the recycler, I did save the cool broiler pan and clean it up and I gave it back to the woman. She can use it in her new GE.

With these older gas ranges, there are a number of problems keeping them working properly overall it’s generally easier to keep a 50s electric range working as long as it doesn’t have too many complicated controls on it which you can’t get easily.

Universal common in Chicago

We had that exact range as a kid, and we left it with the old house. In Chicago these were fairly common as they… were made in Chicago. The pilots were prone to drop out and the thermocouple for the range failed multiple times. These characteristics may be simply typical for a range of this type.
Crown and Universal were the majority of the ranges around Chicagoland it seemed to me at the time.
