I'd like to get an account with the Discuss-o-Vac at www.vacuumland.org but why does the site need you to register by E-Mailing the webmaster instead of the plain old "Type in your account information and click here to create your account" style like this site. Unles someone here can make me an account.

Yahoo! email accounts are free and easy.

Why on earth would you resist something like this? If Vacuum Land's webmaster likes getting emails, then play along. It's his website after all.

It's really not worth worrying about, IM (not-so) HO.

IM (not-so) HO ????

Gosh Kevin,

It sounds like Funguy10 is just asking a simple question. I don't hear any resistance or worry in his message. His/her profile shows that they are new so perhaps you may wish to change back to IMHO :-)

If I've missed something then please set me straight but please no flaming!

Rich

Rich,

I don't know how you construed my post to be 'flame' of any sort. It's just that my opinions are never humble. If ever I have a Humble Opinion, it'll probably go unposted. This is a comment on my own nature, not on Funguy's.

The simple fact of the matter is that I find many net-speak abbreviations to be pointless and silly, and I think way too many people over use them (after all, how many "LOLs" actually convey the concept of someone Laughing Out Loud?). My irreverant modification of 'IMHO' here was intended as a bit of levity, and does not refer in any way to the original message.

I actually 'hear' quite a bit of worry in the OP (he's so averse to giving out his email address that he's asking somebody else to register on his behalf -- odd, because his email address is in his profile), and I was telling him that I think it's unnecessary to worry about such things. Different forums have different procedures, and it's nothing to be concerned about.

Gotcha !

Hi Kevin,

I was asking to not have you flame ME :-)

Thank you for not doing that.

I find that some people are a bit paranoid about giving out info. I found it quite a turn-off that one had ask permission to be a part of the vac group. This is why I am not involved in the vac site. Maybe someday :-) For now this group is just fine for me.

Oh.

Rich,

You had me confused, but on re-reading the message I understand what you're saying. At any rate, I try to reserve "postes flambe'" for special occasions.

Anyway, these days MOST forums have a simple sign-up page, but not everyone does. No matter what the situation, I think that setting up one or more free Yahoo!* account(s) can make your life easier, and you can decide at any point to stop checking that account and wash your hair** of the whole thing. After all, giving out a throw-away Yahoo!* address isn't quite like giving out your SSN any more.

Yahoo! even offers 'disposable' addresses now. I have no idea how these differ from the addresses they've always offered (which, after all, were pretty much free and disposable), but it's a great marketing concept.

* Or whoever -- there are a lot of free email services out there.
** Or whatever you like washing most.

The reason you need to email the webmaster at Vacland.org is because there were a few instances of flaming and posting-abuse by a few people that made it necessary to control access to the site. There is no background check, no urinalysis, DNA profiling, etc. - it's just a precaution.

"** Or whatever you like washing most"--after Kevi

"I don't care to wash my hair

To get it clean, I can't use a machine!"

(This is purely intended as a humourous post, not as a commentary on my real-life grooming habits).

And another reason: Unlike this washer site which is wholly owned by Robert and belongs to him, Vacuumland is a separate paying member club. It costs $35 per year to join however anyone can post there if they mind their P&Q's.
