Working on the Westinghouse Programmed Computer. Most of all the rubber was bad, some of which I had replacements for and some of which I had to make other pieces fit. Got it running pretty well for just a few minutes, then CLANK CLANK! Seems there were a couple of coins that worked their way into the pump! Opened it up, removed them. Its running again when just a few minutes later: CLANK CLANK CLANK again, and MORE coins! It was kind of like hitting the jackpot on a slot machine, only a lot more trouble to pick up the winnings. Finally removed the drum vanes, and the sump was just loaded with coins and pins and nails, and chains and JUNK!. There was so much gunk caught in it I thought it best to replace it rather than clean and reinstall the old one.

Coins that worked their way into the pump. It had been years since this washer had any water in it. I had run hot water thru it to soften the seals and flush any gunk out, but there was just too much.

Removed the sump cover, it had to be torn off in sections. Here is the sump guard with more of the coins on it. My total jackpot was $1.78! Yeah!

This was what was left of the old sump cover. Its supposed to be a flat piece of aluminum, but it has to be torn off to be able to fit thru the drum slot opening.

Rich and I had bought out another old dealers parts a while back and we got boxes of NOS and used parts. Here is the new sump guard, I was so lucky I had a couple of these in my parts..........

This model had 2 drum vanes, one grey and one red. The red vane is the Lint Ejector vane, with openings for the lint/water to flow thru it..............

"Suds & Water Saver" You are supposed to set the red sliding lever to what the scale indicates the clothes "weigh". Love this marketing feature, in real life its pretty useless, but love it just the same!

Yeah its working! I still have a few more leaks! but at least I made progress. I really love this machine and thanks to member and good friend Jeff from Mansfield for making it available to me. I still have quite a bit of restoration on it, but takes time. Feels good to at least see it working again! Thanks Jeff!

Well, its been a LONG time since I used a Westy Slant Front. Guess Im entitled to an OVERSUDS the first couple of times I use it! This way, both the clothes AND the floor get washed!............

Hi Jimmy ! So glad to see it up and running. Did you get the spin worked out? Have you started working on the dryer? Hope to see the pair (and you) soon. By the way didn't westinghouse have an ad about them paying for themselfs with savings ? I don't think this is what they had in mind !

Hi Jeff, yes I got the spin fixed. The reason it would not spin was the water pressure switch was bad. I had a new one from my parts inventory, and also a used one. But the machine was still miswired and it took me about 2 hours to trace all the wiring, one by one and correct it. It cycles fine now, but I still have a couple of slight water hose leaks to deal with. It runs nice and quiet tho, its a great washer!

Well Jimmy!....

.....maybe that machine thought it was a ''coin op''......
(ok..... I can hear the moans from here) LOL Mark

Hi Jimmy,

Great machine!! I didn't realize this one had an oval door opening. Is this a potato-pulley or round pulley model? I'm curious as to where the water enters as well; on Ross's 1951 slant-front it entered at the 2 o'clock position, and on Nate's 1963 slant-front (vertical tub) it entered at the 9 o'clock position. On the later SpaceMates (even my '93) it entered at the 4 o'clock position! How many other variations did they have? It's amazing, the number of ways you can fill a machine...

I had the same coin problem with my Dual-Tumble as well except that the coins were lodged in the outer tub. It made a HORRIBLE loud crunching noise on spin! Pulled one of the vanes and luckily they were in the sump where I could grab them easily, thanks to the improved round screen. Hopefully the coins didn't damage the impeller on yours.

beautiful

I am SO impressed by the work and the results. You pulled three cheeries on this one...I remember a friends mother kept a magnetic screwdriver stuck to the side of her westinghouse...she had to clean coins and other stuff out of the sump so often. The weigh-to-save function was useful in the West...we went through some pretty dry years in the '50s and early '60s. Even if the scale itself was unreliable as all get out, at least it gave people an idea. Question: How much aluminum is involved in the wet components of this machine? I would have thought manufacturers would stay away from it in a day when clorine bleach was used constantly?

Hi guys, The water enters this machine at the 9:00 position, between the upper and lower tub counterweights. Interesting how Westinghouse reshuffled the water inlet on the different machines. The SpaceMate set that Jeff got from me, the water enters from the BACK of the tub, at about 10:00 position and you dont even see it enter the drum!
This is the potato pully style machine, three belts and two shock absorbers on each side of the bottom tub. The only aluminum item on the machine was the sump cover. I dont think the replacement was alum. It seems more like stainless. Alum sure does not last long underwater with lots of chemicals/soap residue.

That machine is so cool! Lucky!

If memory serves, retrieving the coins could have been simpler; just stand in front of the open machine and hold your apron out!

EUREKA HOOVER!

Ok so we see where the cloth apron/ "bag" is to filter out the coins from the air-stream. So the quesiton remains exactly WHAT is generating the suction /vacuum?
