I removed the post. I wouldn't want anyone to become "nauseous" over microwave popcorn...get out the lace hankies and the portable fainting couch.
 
Well....

....I'm putting it right back up again. I know you didn't like what Tom and I said, but that's conversation for you - sometimes it goes off in its own direction.

And I have to deal with the smell of microwaving popcorn several times a day in the workplace. Very tough. One of the things we don't have well worked-out in this modern age of ours is how we avoid bombarding others with our food smells in this age of grab-it-and-go-and-eat-it-anyplace.

Anyway, back to the appliance in question; it's a tiny Litton microwave with a pre-programmed cycle intended for microwaving popcorn only:

Popcorn is best on the stove!

I've never seen a popcorn-only microwave before, how interesting.  I dislike microwave popcorn as well, it's just so much better made on the stove top the old fashioned way.

 

I always thought these little Littons were so cute.  IIRC, Littons at the time came in 3 sizes the full-size, a medium and the little "Go Anywhwere" version that could be hung from a cabinet.  I don't think I've ever seen a micro-convection model, that would be nice in the smaller size.

Years ago I saw these exact model microwaves here in MN at convenience stores. Must have been sometime in the mid '80's I guess.

I wonder if this unit has a sonic sensor. Some of these had a microphone in them to listen for popping to control cycle length.
 
I will admit that burned microwave popcorn smells awful. And I can remember employee breakrooms where the popcorn, burned or otherwise, smelled so strong that anything you brought for lunch tasted like popcorn...and the odor lingered for hours.

Office aroma's.. Have to agree, the smell of someone nuking popcorn in the office was near nauseating. Some of those flavored coffee's were no better, worse in fact because if you made a pot of regular coffee in the same machine it could take on the smell as well.
Then there was always the British guy who brought in onion sandwiches LOL
 
I guess I was fortunate, all the places I worked at had the microwaves limited to the company lunch rooms or employee cafetria's.

What I didn't like was the smell of popcorn mixed in with the smell of someone's fish dinnner combined with the smell of mac & cheese. All cooked in the same microwave. Now THAT was nauseating.
 
I read that steam makes popcorn tough so I pop it in a pan with a paper towel over the pan and then the mesh-type splatter shield on top of that. Either on induction or the resistance unit, it pops beautifully and all of the oil from popping that is carried up by the steam is caught in the paper towel so there is none or almost none deposited on kitchen surfaces.

I have done the same thing using a mesh spatter shield. I would use a heavy Presto pressure cooker on the stove top. Get the oil heated to near the smoke point and toss in the popcorn. I think the shock of the hot oil helps the steam pressure to build up quickly and burst the kernels before it leaks off as slower heating might allow. Always seemed like very few kernels would fail. No shaking or agitation needed either as the whole operation was over in about 60 seconds!

Getting the steam out did seem to leave the popcorn fluffier and there was no condensation dripping off the lid to leave soggy spots too.

Microwave popcorn is convenient but the makeup of the congealed fat block is questionable and I don't like the idea of chemicals from the plastic leaching into the food.
 
Realy tasty popcorn

The absolute best popcorn I've ever eaten is the "Real Theatre Popcorn" from Wabash Valley Farms. I make it in the Whirley Pop that is sold by them.

After having that, I can no longer stand microwave popcorn.
