I have more pics available. I'm hoping someone can purchase them and pick them up before this Friday in Michigan. They are in perfect condition, except the dryer is beginning to make a common squeeking noise which is common to the ball thingy in the back needing to be replaced. ($30-$50 kit) to do it yourself.

very nice set indeed, looks more to be early 80's, but who cares, their a nice clean set....
I would get the dryer lubed and keep them, todays stuff won't be a rugged built or reliable......but it's your choice....

Thank you. My mom got freaked out by the squeeking noise in the dryer, and neither of us our mechanicaly inclined. I cant even change a flat tire haha.
I would rather spend a couple hundred to fix the dryer, but my mom is insisting on a brand new pair. She is a senior and a widow.
It's just difficult to find a reliable trustworthy repairman.
I'm taking best offers. I think 250 for the pair?

Dumping that pair over a little sqeak is crazy. Those GE dryers are simply built and easy to fix, shouldn't cost that much.
Call around and find an honest repair tech before she spends a small fortune on inferior machines.
Probably some member here can connect you with a repairman in your area.

You're right. Thank you. We got some guy to come out Friday afternoon for $54 plus whatever he does in labor/parts. He said it should cost about 100-200 total with the senior discount. I hope his repair will make the unit last another 10 years.

You've just saved yourself not only money, but a world of grief.
New machines are not as well-built or reliable as these vintage units. They often have cheaply-made electronics controlling them, and when a control board goes out - oh, brother!
They also usually can't deliver some of the wash options you're familiar with, like truly hot washes or warm rinses - energy-saving requirements make some of those things hard to provide or even impossible nowadays.
You've done the right thing. I hope you'll continue to hang out here and ask questions if anything else comes up with these machines - there is nothing much that can go wrong with them that somebody here doesn't know how to fix.

Very few elderly people have any idea what a "control board" is or what it does, much less why it costs $300 plus installation to replace some of them.
One of the tough things about getting older and trying to remain independent is that a lot of things start happening you don't really understand, because it's not your generation any more. You have to start dealing with things on faith that you're not being taken advantage of. It's a little nerve-wracking, to say the least.
This keeps your folks using technology they understand, which should help them feel a little more in control of their lives.
My dad is having these issues - when I was a kid, he single-handedly rebuilt the engine of his 1956 Chevy, because he understood cars of that era. Today, he'll get a "Check Engine" light or an error code and it drives him nuts, because the only thing he can do about it is to take the car in and let the dealer relieve him of some of his hard-won savings.

make sure he checks the belt and cleans all the lint out of the machine....it would not hurt for you to check the vent line from the dryer to the outside for buildup......you can buy these brush kits inexpensively that help and give instructions.....you can also check out YouTube vids for info on cleaning out the vent lines.....then again, he may do it all for you....never hurts to ask....

The best decision you can take!
Today's stuff are incomparable, in addiction to what it has been said above, most of new machines often does not wash as good, if you decided differently I bet you'd have your mother telling at how better was this set and deeply regretting it.

Thank you everyone. The grand total was $155 which included his $54 charge just to come out, then he replaced the belt, and the part in the back which I mentioned earlier he would need, plus he replaced some other metal part from the bottom.
He also cleaned out and removed all the lint, vacuumed everything, and even vacuumed (unsolicited) under our fridge and gave us a free dust tool for cleaning the fridge underneath.
He also replaced the entire vent tube that goes from the dryer to the outside. Now the dryer is quite as a mouse!
I'm really happy.
$155 beats $1061 for the new GE washer/dryer set we were going to get at Lowes. The Lowes salesmen said they are no longer making washing machines with the agitator, just "HE" High Efficiency ones. This was the last year to get a non-HE washer according to him.
The repairman today (not from Lowes) recommended Speed Queen full size washer/dryer with the agitator. They still make them.
He also cleaned out and removed all the lint, vacuumed everything, and even vacuumed (unsolicited) under our fridge and gave us a free dust tool for cleaning the fridge underneath.

It seems to me that the back of a GE and Frigidaire dryer look so much the same? Did one manufacturer make one for the other or is it just a coincidence?
