Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I have a GE electric range I think it's a 1949 and it has the same (Warming drawer)it is just a drawer no electric elements or anything else. on the left side. How was this drawer used in everyday 1949 cooking? Also this admiral range is laid out identical to my GE range were they by chance built by the same company? Thanks Bill

Warming drawers had a heating element below the drawer and would not only hold food warm once it was cooked, but they were also a great place to proof dough. I don't know the role of warming ovens in meal service of the time. Sorry.

Warming Drawer:

The role of the warming drawer was simple:

Stay-at-home housewives often found their husbands delayed getting home - late train, traffic jam, boss had something on his mind, whatever.

A warming drawer could hold a meal so that Daddy could come home to a hot dinner with the rest of the family; it was considered important then that the family sit down together (it should be considered more important now than it is).

It also made it easy to hold food if you were having guests, making it possible to prepare things ahead and be completely ready when guests arrived.

"Warming drawers" with no elements are actually storage drawers mis-represented by ignorant sellers who don't have a clue what they're talking about.
