vintage apartment size front load dryer

Hello, I'm andrea from Minneapolis. I'm looking for a Vintage apartment size or small front load windowed dryer. Non working and cheap. It's for a display for our store Monkey in a Dryer. Anyone have a lead or has one to sell, please email me or post here.

I'm trying to think of an "apartment size" vintage dryer that actually had a window.   Most dryers don't.   I believe the ones with windows were upper end models, so I doubt you'll find an "apartment" size dryer with a window.   Unless you find an older imported, compact dryer, but then again, I don't know there were very many with windows.

 

I'd suggest diligently searching Craig's List (www.craigslist.org).   Or try getting friendly with some appliance repair guys or smaller appliance shops that sell new or used appliances (not Lowes / Home Depot).   Let them know what you are looking for and why, then check back on a regular basis (they tend to forget).   They might haul an older machine away when delivering something newer, that could work.    It may be possible, though unlikely, they might have a newer-ish front load type set.   A lot of those dryers have windows, but they are obviously not vintage. 

 

If you find your search (over time) is not producing any results, you may want to consider buying a regular dryer and having some handy friend install a window.   As it's only for display it doesn't need to be a perfect installation, but this could be an option.

 

You could also try contacting Robert, the webmaster for this site, (also in Minneapolis) he may be able to offer a suggestion or idea. 

 

This image (created by Ken - bajaespuma) is an early-mid 60's full size Whirlpool dryer with a window (one of the few I can think of at the moment).

That door will also fit any Whirlpool or Kenmore portable dryer. John put that window door on one of the little stacking dryers he installed for a friend in a tiny house in Baltimore.

Andrea, you will probably run into all sorts of bleeding hearts who will tell you that such a set up will encourage children to put pets and other children in dryers, making you an advocate for dangerous actions on the part of little hellions.

You might have better luck finding a 24 inch wide washer and sort of disguising it to look like a dryer since it would have the window in the door. If you do the mockup, be sure to take pictures so that you can have posters or framed enlargements to hang all over the store or to sell or put on t-shirts or sweat shirts. If you contact our Robert, you might arrange for a photo shoot with your monkey in his WP washer-dryer combination which has a nice, big window. You will need lighting in the drum of any appliance to make your monkey more visible.

It might be easier to get a non-working small combo front loading washer/dryer, like a Malber, and use that for the display.

Technically it is designed to dry clothes so it could be called a dryer.

And I suspect there are a number of them no longer working. The trick is finding one. After that, I imagine you'd want to remove the concrete block weights from the interior to make it easier to move around the display area.

These are all good suggestions. I think the idea of a small washer with a window and convert it to look like a dryer. Also, I'll get in touch with Robert especially since he local. If anyone as any leads on a small front window washer, let me know. Like I said, Don't care if it runs

Stupid response... or you could just change the name of your business to "Monkey in a Washer"... Non-working front loaders with a window are endless.

(I admit, the name is really catchy and difficult to forget!)

Try this..

Get a used low-end Kenmore or whirlpool dryer with the smaller door. You will probably find one on the curb if you look enough. Go to Wal Mart and get a large glass (pyrex - world kitchen) pie pan about 12" or larger across. Paint the edge of the pie pan black or any color. Using tin snips, cut a hole in the dryer door just smaller than the edge of the pie pan, with the dish of the pain inwards. Viola! you have a window! I don't think you could use this is a working dryer but should be OK for you. I want to see it when you are done! You can probably also by now come across a broken Whirlpool Duet dryer with the window. Good Luck!

P.S. Another one that will work is the Frigidaire/White westinghouse dryers with the controls in front. An apartment manager might have some of those.

I was thinking one like this......the light can be turned on, even of not running.....if its a gas version, you won't have any troubles, just plug into a regular outlet

Pictures of Final Project from Monkey in a Dryer

Well, we decided to make our own out of wood. Here are pics of the final project of the Dryer. The store display won't be done for about a month, but I'll post those pics too once we have it done. I attached one photo but I uploaded others to our facebook page to see more.
