Vintage Frigidaire Range- Should I buy? Pros and cons?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I got it cleaned up, and it is even nicer than I thought! Almost mint! It is installed in the kitchen, and EVERYTHING works, except the Speed Heat. Even the clock and timer work perfect, and the oven is only about 5 degrees off. Going to cook dinner now and will report back with results.

Oven Calibration...

Thats an easy fix....Heres how, first pull off the thermostat knob, the shaft should have a small hole down the center, find or make a small flat blade screwdriver that will fit all the way down to the screw ...about 1 1/2 inches or so, put the knob back on and set to 350, leave for about 1 hour to get a correct reading...open the door quickly and note temp...say it 360...turn the knob to 360 or close to it..pull off knob, insert screwdriver and gently turn back until it clicks off...put knob back on and let temp equalize for 20 min or so, check again...should be very close.

After you

get used to how Radiantubes work, you will never go back to a new stove! The Radiantubes are a bit slower to respond than a Calrod, but the heat is much more evenly distributed...and the Frigidaire oven is by far leagues ahead of anything made today!

OMG!

I'm HOOKED! It has already exceeded all my expectations! Love it! I made Tater tot casserole (not overly healthy, but quick and easy), and baked some grands biscuits, and everything came out perfect! I first browned the hamburger and onions, and I can't believe how evenly the radiantubes heat. And so easy to control and responsive! Great temperature control and a wide range of heat from high to low. I had to bake the casserole for about 30 minutes, so I set the timer for 20, and then put the biscuits in at the end, and even with the casserole in the oven, it baked them perfectly, all exactly the same color, top and bottom. I thought the Whirlpool we had worked pretty well, but this blows it out of the water!

How would I go about repairing the Speed heat burner? Whether to work as it originally did, or just as a standard burner, as long as it's working, it is fine with me.

The Speed Heat

Had a special control, unlike most infinite heat switches, it was wired for both 220 and 110 volt operation, the original unit would be a 110 volt unit, when turned on it sends 220 thru the unit for a pre determined time determined on how high the swithch was set, then a bimetal switch warps and the contacts go from 220 to 110 for the rest of the cooking time...the problem was , when operating at 220 they drew about 5000 watts, very hard on the contacts and the unit...if the contacts stuck, the unit would be burned out very shortly, but usually what happens is the switch fails because of the high wattage on the contacts..the switches are next to impossible to find and very expensive when you do....as long as it works I would let it be...the one on my Norge works fine after all these years.
