Vintage low-end Westy dryer anyone??

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Friends of ours in Dallas had the somewaht "matching" washer--instead of black color, the panel was yellow.  The water temp was controlled by the time of wash cycle.  Otherwise, identical.  Natrually the water level was in the door next to the weight-to-save scale.

Shipping

Any idea where I could get a shipping quote for something like that, it's rather far, but for 50 bux if the shipping isn't insane I'd take it.

Neat Westinghouse Dryer

One thing to be aware of if you want, have or get one of these dryers, is that they have asbestos insulation under the heater box which is on the floor of the machine. If you do not have to go into the box, it is probably not a problem. You just need to think about where you are working on it; outside might be better, and vacuum up any dust that might get out of the machine as you work on it. Wear a mask, maybe, while working on it and don't do any scrubbing or use vigorous motions with the vacuum's dusting brush around the heater box base and clean the brush well afterwards, too. It is a small price to pay for a dryer with a window to let you watch the tumbling.

I've been trying for quite some time to find out more about the model of Westinghouse dryer that was in our house when I was growing up.  The one in the pic above is getting closer to what it looked like.  Ours had the same style of door with the window and latch and the controls were on the panels however the panel was slanted, the timer knob was on the right and the heat setting knob was way to the extreme left on the panel.  I can't remember for sure but I don't recall there being a lint filter on the top either. Anyone ever seen a dryer like this?

The front door, porthole/glass, door latch look just like my 1976 westy washing machine's. The top door looks like where one adds bleach too.

My 1976 westy dryer looks nothing like that dryer at all.

1976 westy dryer here has a totally different door.

Your dryer looks like really an early 1960's USA westy washer, where the tube is horizontal and the door piece has a slight slant.

Maybe Canada used the USA's westy washer's front door piece?

I guess maybe say in 1962 westinghouse made a matched pair that the dryer looked just like the washer; ala the old 1950's "twins"?

My Mom's first dryer, purchased in '62 or '63, was very similar to the one in Paul's picture. However, the control panel was more like the washer the kids are putting sand in, though lower like the dryer shown. Perhaps the dryer above is another model year, a more basic model, or a Canadian variation. These were the last version of the slant-fronts.

Both the washer and dryer got side hinged, inset doors when Westinghouse restyled their machines for 1964. There was evidently a major problem with the door on the washer. The '64 washer we had always leaked around the door, and the door rusted badly. Therefore, by the late 60's they changed the washer door to the style that had been used on the early 60's models. The dryers kept the new style door, however.

Paul that is one nice dryer !
Never seen that model before, cauld you imagine that with the washer !
I wounder how that lint screen looks on top ?
Sooo run and get them before hubby sees this post lol.
Come on it's very clean and a GE washer for 50!
That is incredible.
Thanks for posting.

Westinghouse slantfronts

Not to nitpick but not all slantfronts had windows in the door. The earlier versions had no windows at all in the door and later BOL dryers had a black panel that simulated a window but was really a solid door. Jeb.
