Hi, I am looking for a vintage pink washing machine and dryer. I prefer Maytag, but will consider other brands. I love the models that have backlit displays. Anyway, if someone knows where I may purchase a set, I will be so grateful!!

Pink W/D set

Hi Dawn:

If you are looking for a pink set you may be in for a long wait. That color was gone by about '65 as far as I know. Even if you find one there is the likelihood that they will need at least some work. This brings the parts availability situation into the picture as well.

What you might want to consider is getting a slightly newer set and having the cabinets painted pink by an auto body shop. The white Maytag center dial set in the link that I included (open it and scroll down to see the picture) is a good example as they made this particular style from 1966 to 1980 and they turn up all the time on Craigslist and Ebay. They still have that retro look and most parts are still easy to get - and they are very reliable machines. The same basic mechanism was around from the late '50's to 2006.

Good luck with your search - you have come to the right place!

having the cabinets painted pink by an auto body shop.

That's a great idea.

That's what I would do. I'd find the style that I like best, and the best working machines, then have them painted if I wanted pink or turquoise or something else.

I love the pink set on ebay. This guy wants $2,000 for it. I realize it is overpriced. If I can find another set without selling my soul or 1 kidney, that would be great. Thanks to all of you who are trying to be helpful. By the way, have any of you checked out the site www.retrorenovation.com ? For those who are restoring mid century homes, it is inspiring. There are galleries of vintage kitchens, bathrooms. and advertisements. 1940's-1960's.

Hi Dawn and WELCOME! AW.org is a great place with great people, you will enjoy it here!

Just an FYI about this pink set on eBay in Florida... as beautiful as they are (and they are far from perfect, by the way) this guy has been offering this same on ebay for the same price for 3 years now! I went as far as writing to him last lear and asking their condition, etc. He replied saying either one or both don't work (I don't remember).

THe bottom line is he's not really interested in selling them, hence the "sale price". I wonder what he's been smoking, LOL.

I would say if they were brand new, never used and still in the original shipping crates, then and only then could they be worth anything close to this price. Just my opinion.

For example...

...I bought a 1961 Maytag A700 (same washer as the pink one except in white) in really nice shape for $30 on Craigslist last month.

So far it has just needed some clean up and minor maintenance. I should have the work on it completed shortly. Not bad for being 49 years old!

Your search will turn something up, but maybe not in pink. When this one appeared I wasn't even looking that hard!

I also found.........

.......This truly matched Maytag A700 & DE701 set (both built in Dec 1962) on Craig's List about a year and a half ago for $100 for both. The both worked but needed a "tune up" and the washer (still) needs a tub seal.

But still a GREAT find, especially since my parents had the same washer (but in PINK) as I grew up. So these are special to me.

Pink Maytag

Hasn't that Maytag pair keep popping up for a while now? It seems like I've seen this more than once. The seller must be on something.

For that price...

...he should at least have had them worked on to get them in tip-top mechanical condition.

I just hope that someday they don't meet with a bad end. Maybe he will eventually come to his senses on the price and someone will get them and restore them.

I was talking to my grandparents about buying a vintage washer and dryer...they responded that they have an old washboard in the shed for free!!! Not that vintage, Grandma.
