Vintage refrigerator folks ?

Like most folks here I collect washers and dryers - but I also have a growing stove and refrigerator collection.

Does anyone have any cool links for other sites or folks with vintage fridge collections ? I'd love to network - see pics of other collections - and meet some Fridge wackos !

1940 Gibson

Here's a 1940 Gibson I saved from a fate worse than death, it was destined to be turned into a smoker! Rewired, it works like new, just have to find one drawer for it. I also have a 47 Firestone, no pics yet.

I like the 40's and 50's Frigidaires, just haven't found one that's reasonably priced.

Gibson and 53 Frigidaire

Nice work on saving the Gibson - and I also especially love the 53 Frigidaire in the other posting.
Funny that you guys posted those - two of my recent additions are a Gibson from a little bit later in the 40's that looks quite similar with the scalloped door and also a 53 Frigidaire Freezer - (the 53 Frigidaire refrigerator's big brother)

I have not even cleaned them up yet - but will take some pics tomorrow and post.

I am taking a road trip tomorrow to pick up a 53 Crosley with the center handle and water dispenser in the door. I have been looking for this one for a while - so it should be a pretty happy day !

Well I've got a 1937 Frigidaire D3-37 (the baby fridge) a 1936 GE V5 flat top and a GE monitor top CK-30. They're all in storage, but I hope to have at least one of them running and doing its thing by the end of summer.

Let me know if I can help with fridge stuff.

Here is a pic of the '48 Servel. It is the only pic I have for now - the fridge is now surrounded by junk, er, treasures. It works, but needs a full resto. It has been brush painted and the shelves are corroded. The door gasket is useless too. I had this hooked up after power was knocked out by Hurricane Humberto last fall, but ended up not using it - got my back up generator working.

1965 Frigidaire

This machine is in perfect shape, gaskets and all. Solid porcelian inside and out. Does it weigh a lot, OMG, that's why I put rolling casters on it!

Tryed to sell it a while back, but I am not giving it away.

Just in case you've never seen it, the '48 Servel makes a cameo appearance in the Alfred Hitchcock movie Rope. There's a pic below. In the movie itself, there is a pretty clear shot of the interior when John Dall goes to take a bottle of Champagne from the reefer. Interestingly, in the movie, the Servel logo on the freezer compartment door has been painted over- these were the days before product placement. Hitchcock chose most things you see in his films for very specific reasons, and I don't think the Servel is an exception. The penthouse apartment in Rope is supposed to be extremely luxurious, and Servels offered one luxury that not even the most expensive electric units could match- absolutely silent operation. I've often wished I could find a good '48 Servel and restore it. I know that takes some doing, because of safety issues, but they're great reefers. We had a 1950s Servel in the apartment we lived in before my parents bought our first house.

BTW, anyone who's snickering over how primitive the kitchen in the photo looks should understand- those metal-edged Formica countertops were hot, cutting-edge stuff in '48. At the time Rope was filmed, the KA KD-10 dishwasher was still a year away from being introduced.

Oh, and Dave:

Here's a shot of a '48 that was for sale on Kijiji some time back- it shows the interior pretty clearly. Like yours, this one is hinged on the right; the one in Rope is the much rarer left-hinged version. Back then, there were no reversible doors; you ordered a reefer hinged right or left depending on your kitchen's layout. The one in the pic still has the white plastic overlay on the door handle; most Servels of this vintage that I've seen have it missing.

Thanks for the pics and info. I did not know there was a white overlay on the handle - I thought it was supposed to be chrome.

My Servel is missing the freezer door - it looks like the pivot pegs rusted long ago. This picture will help me to have it reproduced, I didn't know the glass was blue. Do you by chance have a close-up picture of it?

In addition to the bottom drawers, mine has a small drawer on the top shelf.

Dave:

The freezer door was plastic, like Plexiglas, I believe; it also appears to have a "cracked ice" sort of texture. I haven't seen one of these babies in good shape up close and personal; they usually have serious interior problems, so I don't have personal memories of a Servel freezer door to share with you. That Kijiji pic is the only real-life photo I've seen of a Servel with the freezer door intact. If you will rent or buy the DVD of Hitchcock's Rope, there's a very good shot of the freezer door where John Dall goes inside the reefer to get out the bottle of Champagne. However, the freezer door in the movie has its Servel logo (seen in the Kijiji pic I posted) painted over with blue paint matching the color of the door itself. Back in those days, they didn't allow too many trademarks to show in movies. The shot of the door in Rope is very clear; if you'll freeze-frame it with your remote, you should have the clearest possible view of what it looked like. Just the word "Servel" is painted over; the three lines below the word are still there, and so are the words "Ice Cubes" (to the left of the three lines) and "Frozen Food" (to the right).

Maybe between the Kijiji photo I posted, and a viewing of Rope, you'll have enough info to try reproducing the door. I hope so.
