VIntage small appliance fun: a test-drive of the 1937 GE Hotpoint Mixer

I've been down in Ogden while Hubby is yet again away in Brazil and today's job was to clean up and try to de-clutter the 'Ogdenville Appliance Museum', located above the garage.    

 

I concluded that a:  I am, in fact, a hoarder  and  b: dang, I have some really cool old mixers!

 

I decided to take a break and play with one of 'em...

I picked this 1937 (possibly 1938) GE Hotpoint stand mixer.   I've had it for years (it moved to Ogden in 2007) but I don't remember ever using it!  For shame...

And I just happened to have this GE Doctrine from 1937, too...

But I think they intended for these recipes to be used in a kitchen like this...   Oh well,  my 56 GE range would HAVE to do!

I chose a sponge layer cake recipe.   Egg whites in the large bowl, yolks in the small one.   I love the tapered design of some of the really early mixer bowls!

Let's see how well those itty-bitty beaters do on the egg whites.

So far, so good...

Success!  I'd like to try a side-by-side test of these older small-beater machines with later models.  Well one, day when I have the time... Oh, wait...   LOL

Now for the yolks.   

 

BTW the bowl on this GE mixer does not turn by itself!

Beaten light and sugar added.  Looking good!

The recipe recommended finishing the recipe by hand, so I did, using my cake whip that I use for bigger sponge, angel, and chiffon cakes.

Into the pans... And bake at 350 for 25 to 30 minutes

Hmmm, maybe 20 minutes next time... Well, at least they didn't fall!

Looks like that 1937 GE mixer is still up to the job--those cakes look delicious-would love to bite a plug out of one of those!!!
