Two Avocado KA Portable DWs

Hi Phil, and I will also add my thanks for all the appliances you post, keep up the great work.

These two KAs are different models, the one you found is a less expensive machine than Andy's, so it is missing the side trims and lower trim on the lower panel. It also does not have the wood top of Andy's and even though the top does not look good in the picture it should be a real Porcelain top and at certain angles Porcelain has a orange peel type of look which might be what we are seeing in the photo.

That cute little Whirlpool Convertible washer in post# 28 is an early version that spins at 936 RPMs, it should be an LAC4900W, it even has the cute chrome agitator cap, it should be a 1974-5 vintage machine.

John, thanks for chiming in! Now that explains it so well - for a split hair of a second I thought "this looks like a different model" but passed on.

I'm not a big fan of the portables, but "cute" is about the best word for WP Convertible - they looks brand spanking new, too.

Hi Phil,

I hadn't seen your question about the lid openings right away, SO SORRY for that.

The lid openings in full-size WP washers, even the DD models to a lesser extent, always had a non-round opening. They are more of a D-shape, which in the belt-drives was necessary to create enough space for the console behind. What you were seeing was not an illusion in the picture. Not only is the opening in the top D-shaped, but the tub ring is D-shaped as well.

The DDs have this too, to a lesser amount. The top has a softened D-shape, but the tub ring is round, or nearly so.

I'm glad you like the little washers - they are pretty cool!

Gordon I was laughing at my postings...buried in China below, how people find those postings let alone the comments. That's actually interesting, that it's not round ...would have never guessed. Just amazing how manufacturers once had so many variations, whether to their good or bad detriments, at one time. Where do you see a D shape opening for a washer or dryer today? Now I know form follows function, and this proves it again. And I appreciate the education. I might graduate from Washer Lid and Opening Designs, one day. :^D
