I bet the "overheating" is due to a gummed up condenser fan. It probably was able to run when the condenser fan motor was hot and the old oil was not too sticky, but after being shut off for a month, the fan wouldn't restart.

Who knows what the hot smell is, maybe a stalled fan in the FF section as someone has removed it.
This ref has a static condenser so no condenser fan motor to fail.
It may just have a bad relay on the compressor, WH had terrible relays etc by the 1960s.
