Water cooling dispenser recommendation

This is our old Cordley Temprite water cooling dispenser that we've had for over 20 years. It served us well until it's been having a problem recently. It's got a odd smell coming out of it like the coils are dirty but the water no longer comes out cold like it should. Originally I thought about taking it in to get fixed but there would've been a good chance that they wouldn't be able to fix this one up either since at one point we actually had two of these, one of them was used up at our cabin until we sold the place and brought it back home with us. So now I'm thinking about getting a replacement dispenser for Christmas. What should I look into? I'd prefer something simple like this, I know I won't be using hot water. Also I'd prefer something where you put the water jug on top. And I'd like something that would last as long as this one but I don't know if there's one out there today that'd hold up for a long time. The cheaper, the better as I don't want to spend a whole lot. I found one on amazon for $80 but I'm not sure if it's worth it though. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Speaking for myself, I'd get something very basic, and when it's time to upgrade your refrigerator, get one that dispenses filtered, chilled water.  No more lifting heavy bottles and having that whole apparatus taking up space, and the cost of replacing the filter on a yearly basis pencils out way cheaper and is much easier on your back.

That does seem awfully cheap, must be a Thermo electric cooling system because it also doesn’t cool the water very cold as you can see from the specs.

In addition to having very little capacity, a Thermo electric, heating and cooling system uses a lot of electricity. it’s a very inefficient process.

I assume your current one has a real compressor refrigeration cycle in it?

Our GE fridge from 1990 already has a water dispenser. But the problem is there's not enough room to fill up big cups of water or ice even. And our fridge was custom for the kitchen, it would be VERY expensive to find a new fridge like ours so we're doing all we can to have it fixed.

Yeah it did had the water cold before like it'd make a noise similar to what a fridge would do which I assume is a refrigeration compressor. So does our other one we have which is a Primo but the water jug is on the bottom and I'm not a fan of those, actually our first one only lasted for a little while but so far the Primo that replaced it is still going which thank goodness.

I'm not buying a used one, I could still try to have the other one fixed but again, we tried doing it with our other one but for whatever reason we couldn't get it fixed. So that's why we bought another one to replace it. Plus even if it could get fixed, I don't want to spend alot on it because it doesn't get used as much as the other one.

About 20 years ago I got a side by side Kitchenaid fridge with a built in icemaker and filtered cold water dispenser. Depending on how much water/ice I use, have to replace the filter about once every year or two. And there's a little light inside the fridge door to let me know when to replace the filter.

 

I refill a 2.5 quart bottle with the filtered fridge water about once a day.
 
I see where you're coming from but there's a reason why we bought a water dispenser in the first place. Again, we have a fridge that came with a water dispenser but one problem is that bigger cups don't fit in there. A replacement fridge would be VERY costly to replace because it was custom made. Secondly, the water dispenser in the kitchen sink has problems and it'd also be VERY costly to replace. And thirdly, it is nice to not have to walk up or down the stairs to get into the kitchen. Especially my dad because he's got foot problems and he doesn't want to walk down from the bedroom to refill up the CPAP machine as it recommends fresh water. Or anybody who comes stay at our house in the basement with a CPAP machine as well or needs a fresh drink of water since my uncle who visits alot uses the dispenser. Now I think I can live without fixing the dispenser and just use it as is but it is so old that the water doesn't taste good anymore.
 
That's great for you. However, our fridge has a hard time with filling up cups that are as big and wide as this 30 oz Tumblr or bigger because it wasn't designed for them. Not that it can't because it can, it's just that it's awkward to fill up, it makes a mess if you're not careful watching the water or ice from spilling over, and it doesn't fill these cups all the way up with water.

Anyways, I'm going to start looking around for a new dispenser this week. I'll go ahead and take the old one in for repair for last minute hopes that I can save it at a reasonable deal. But I'm not getting my hopes up.

Have you considered a commercial water fountain?

May be expensive but should last forever and there are used ones out there. It's also possible to place a filter before the fountain.
