I'm moving Phil's post out of the Laundress post and into a new thread as to not highjack the other thread. I will answer it in here...

Hi Phil, good post let me try and respond to some of your great suggestions and how I feel about them...

Robert,

Thanks a lot for your reply. I imagine there's quite some work involved in making those changes.

Yes hours and hours and hours of work, but it's not like I haven't done before for aw.org.

Here are a few suggestions I could easily live without but I'll make them anyway! About the number of active threads in each section, I was wondering if there could be a series of pages showing active threads, like on other forums I visit. Older threads could remain active but displayed on page 2, or even on page 144... And if someone would like to add a comment to an old thread, it would be brought back to page 1. I don't know how Google works but I imagine this could solve some of the problems related to the number of links displayed on each page.

Possibly, but I do not like forums that have a lot of pages and not much information on each.  One of the nice things about the way our system works is that its fast and you don't have to scroll though 10, 15, 20 or more pages to read a long thread.

As most of us care about keeping things from the past active, keeping the older threads active rather than archived would make sense to me! I don't like too much when there's a lot of sticky threads with no new post since last year on the first page of a forum and you have to scroll down to see the newest posts (and I know there's no such thing here!), but sometimes it's fun to resurrect an old thread when some related information/questions could be added to a topic without having to start the same discussion all over. And with available email notification, some members who don't watch the new posts everyday or even every month could visit and add comments if the old thread they posted in resurfaces. Members posting about a particular machine of their collection could update their original thread too if they did work on their machine of if they have a new issue with it or just if they had fun making a video of it!

Yes I do agree with you that I should come up with a way of keeping all threads active so they can be re-responded to months or even years later.  That will be done at some point.

Another nice feature of some forums is that email notification could be turned on/off for each thread you post in or you can choose to subscribe to a thread even without posting in. It can also notify only once when there's a new post after the last one you read from each thread you subscribed to and the email links bring you directly to the first unread post from the thread you're visiting. That's nice on 14 page threads!

We wont be having 14 page threads, as I said above I don't like forums that do that, but an eMail feature is certainly a possibility.  That also will be done at some point.

It could be nice to have multiple page threads instead of having to make a part 2 and a part 8 in a different thread.

Possibly but I still want the pages to be very long, as I said above forums with threads that are 10 posts per page are very annoying to read in my opinion.

It would also be nice to be able to do multiple quotes in one post so you could reply to 3 posts at a time because sometimes, it's hard to link too distant posts in a discussion.

See my comment below.

It would also be nice to be able to post links anywhere you want in a post rather than at the bottom and to have a feature that allows you to embed pictures from other websites. I know it's already possible and I occasionally do it (I love to see pictures!) but it seems to be challenging to some who (like me) aren't too familiar with computers.

Regarding posting links anywhere, this feature was added a few weeks back, you can now post links anywhere in the text and they automatically convert themselves into clickable links, such as http://www.vacuumland.org.  I don't like the idea of giving people an easy way of embedding images from other websites, it can very easily run afoul of copyright law.  It's OK if you own the pictures, but most do not, so for that I say no.  Also added a few weeks ago is the ability to simply copy the youtube url and paste it into a post, it automatically converts the youtube link into a playable video.

big big wish..

I would love if we had a section just for listing items we have in our collections that are up for offer, either free or at a price, and items we are looking for, which other members may have laying around.

If this is an option at all, I think it would benefit all of the members.

Maybe a Swap Meet - online

A place for people to look for machines and parts from other members. I know at one time Robert had a page with rare or hard to find machines people were looking for too. I think we are all on the hunt for them. This is my "Go To" site several times a day. I've referred to it when people ask me about websites that run well, look good and are informative.  Btw, do you have Google Analytics embedded in the website? I bet the traffic on this site would be amazing.

I would like.....IF possible-

I use and like our internal email program "washer mail," big time.

I would like a tweak or two, and they would probably take more programming time and perspiration than a non-programmer like me could imagine.

I would like a draft mode. There are times when I am writing a washer mail, and am either interrupted, or want to verify a bit of data. Draft mode would be so helpful to me.

I would also like a one way EXPORT, if that would be possible.......like how Facebook sends messages to the email a person devotes to Facebook, I would like washer mails to be here, and also sent to my gmail.... or a forward button here????

Generally speaking, however, this site is "practically perfect in every way."

I like that idea...

I agree with Kevin, Joe and Malcom about a for trade or sale catagory. Not sure about a "Found On C/L and Ebay" list as it's fun to see them on the appropriate forums for pics, memories and discussion.

On the topic of the club Washer Mail, I'd like the option of sending one message to several people at once (A C.C. option if you will...) to save having to type the same message over and over to separate people.

Thanks, Robert (and Fred!) for providing a second home for us hopeless appliance nuts...

One thing I've noticed is the photo album option when I change or look at my own profile, but, I don't see an option to see other members albums if they have pictures posted. Or, are those albums under the Photos of Our Collections tab?

I hope I'm not out of line here, but I wish there was something attached to a persons user name that would let me know he or she is a kid. That way I'd know to tread lightly when responding to their comments or questions. Perhaps the term 'Junior Member' could be used, or something else along those lines.

I too would like to be able to revive an old thread. I've been bumping my Foodarama thread so that I don't clutter up the forum by having to make new threads every time I do new work on it, which might be a month or so after a previous update. Thanks for all of the work you do on this forum, Robert.

I see the swap meet section as possibly problematic.  If something is not exactly up to what was posted, or shipping issues ensue it could create issues that might impact the rest of the very friendly site...

I second Louie's request. At least the ability to maintain links as they change would be greatly appreciated.

<blockquote>At least the ability to maintain links as they change would be greatly appreciated.</blockquote> If you're referring to linking to AW threads in posts at other sites or in posts in other AW threads, e-mailing URLs, etc., can do that already.  When copying/pasting a thread link, lop-off everything after the _ (underscore) so that only the thread number remains.

Example: The link in my browser URL field for this thread as I'm viewing it at the moment is:  <pre>http://www.automaticwasher.org/cgi-bin/TD/TD-VIEWTHREAD.cgi?45495_11#start_45495.10</pre>

A link to the thread saved as <pre>http://www.automaticwasher.org/cgi-bin/TD/TD-VIEWTHREAD.cgi?45495</pre>will always go to the thread no matter how many more posts are added to it (lop off _11#start_45495.10).

Of course, external links don't work for ATTT or DL sections if the individual clicking the link doesn't have privileges to access them.

Pictures for Private Messages:

Perhaps we could have pictures embedded in the Private Messaging system, the same way we do with the Discuss-O-Mat? Although, I'm aware this might chew up bandwidth on servers...

Thanks Robert for taking the time to improve the website, based on user request. You've got a fine site here, with lots of friendly people. Lets make it better than ever before!

Thanks guys, some great ideas. I like most of them.

Here is what I'm going to do first. I'm going to work on thread resurrection bringing all the old threads in the archives back to active, so while the Index pages will display 100 posts at a time, now you'll be able to click a previous button to move backwards in time and bring old threads back to the top.

This is going to be a MAJOR system change with many many hours of work involved and there probably will be some bugs to work out so I will need everyone's help.

There are two issues in doing this:

#1 is the threads that I closed for what ever reason, such as they threads that were causing too much controversy. In the old system once they went to the archive I didn't need to save the "Closed" indicator flag because every thread was closed in the archives. Now if I open this up there is a chance that some controversial thread that I previously closed will be open again and can be brought back to the top. I can easily close them again and this time they will stay closed in the new system, but it will be a one by one task. So this is something I will ask the membership to help me be on the lookout for to mark them as offensive if the come back to the top.

#2 The Super forum used to be the catch-all and off-topic forum. It no longer is that way and off-topic posts are only allowed to be posted by Upgraded Members in the As the Tub Turns and Dirty Laundry Forums. So I probably should close all Super Forum threads created before a certain time, but there are some great old on topic threads such as small appliances and ranges that I really don't want to close so I don't have any idea how to handle this yet. So I'm open for suggestions as to handle these two problems.

But I do absolutely agree, we've got so many great old threads, 40,000+ as a matter of fact, so I think its a great idea to open these up and be able to resurrect them.

How about this idea Robert?

Robert -

I too have thought numerous times "Wow, this would be cool if we could re-open this thread or bring it back up for discussion".

I understand what you're saying about the coding necessary to re-open threads, and at the same time I'm wondering how a re-opened old thread is going to look as compared to all the current threads which would be inter-mixed in the active list. It would be cool if we had a "second rinse" light show up as a means to let us know that this is a re-heated topic.

So, I wonder, instead of returning a closed thread to the active field, or potentially opening them all, what if a box was check-marked at the start of a new thread which links the new thread to the old (the posting member would have to tell the system what thread number they want to re-activate) and instead of re-activating the entirety of the old thread, we'd get a summary of it in the new one in the form of the last few posts, AND a link to the whole thread or something that would expand the old data at reader's click. The system could also copy the title from the old thread onto the new one.

This way the old threads could technically stay old and closed, and the new data would be going onto a new thread number. Would this save coding complexity?

A totally different suggestion for an enhancement

Robert -

I think we talked about this a year or two ago, and it seemed like a good idea at the time, but what about having a "Registry" section where members voluntarily list the machines in their collections, or the gems, if you will?

I think I used an example from the Mustang enthusiasts websites where there are several registries out there for owners of rare models, where the owners of these can get together to share parts, share mechanical and service knowledge, or even consider having a part remanufactured. In one of these registries, 5,000 of a model were made in the early nineties, and at one time I believe 3/5 of those were represented in the registry.

Would it be of value if we had a purely voluntary registry of our own that showed all those who had a WO-65, or a 1959 Lady Kenmore, or a GE Dispensall, etc? This seems like it would be useful for anything from knowing who else had a machine like mine sort of thing, to finding resources for specific information or parts sources.

Again, this would be purely voluntary.

To start a new discussion you can always put the link in the first message, so no need for a special system to refer to an older thread. It's just as easy I guess.

But it would be nice indeed to be able to open old threads again.

Would it be too much work to move the off topic threads to mark them as As the tub turns and Dirty Laundry threads? In that way we wouldn't be able to bring off topic threads in the Super Forum.
