Ice Storm

We had a HUGE ice storm hit our area. The power got knocked out on Saturday, and finally just came back on this afternoon. It got really cold inside the house, but a couple of extra comforters on top of the bed made it tolerable (a companion would have helped even more ;-)

I took some pics on Sunday of what this thing did to our yard. I'm gonna post these assuming that the bandwidth issue is over.

Andy, thanks for sharing the pictures, this helps all of us remember how lucky we are. I am glad that you at least have power now.

29°F here, and very drippy right now, but I'm glad the cold has set in...just the way I like it. Everything outside has a layer of ice. In the washhouse, the laundry room was 70° as of this afternoon. The main room seemed a bit colder (probably around 63-65° or so), but the heater is on and doing its job. Both the gas furnace and electric central in the house are set on 72°.

Tomorrow will be the second consecutive day of no school; the days off are OK, but I'd rather get off on Easter and the other holidays as planned. In all actuality, classes COULD have been held today; we didn't receive any rain/sleet until the late afternoon which was completely opposite of what was predicted. Go figure.

i work at a large hotel, and NOBODY can shut up about the weather. employees are calling-off in record numbers. everyone is stranded. nevermind that the temp was BARELY below freezing. if i hear one more "stay warm"-type comment im gonna slap somebody!

Then you best stay away from my grandmother, LOL.

Still 30°F last I saw. Or 32°F depending on what/where one looks. I'd check the outdoor temp reading on the 'stat, but I'm afraid pressing the buttons would disturb the recovery process. Drizzle has stopped, there's a faint mist.

Here's the Carrier getting frosty. I caught it defrosting when I got home @ 1 AM. Maybe can catch it again for a photo op.

Coldest Calif Spell in 50 Years--Not

Hey Sudsmaster,

This cold snap that appears to have finally subsided today in California was not the worst in 50 years, at least not in the Bay Area or LA. I don't know how long you've lived in the Bay Area, but having lived here nearly all of my 52 years, the worst I have ever experienced and the only time my pipes ever froze was back in December of 1990. It was down to 23 overnight where I live near Los Gatos and didn't get above the mid 30's all day. I am pretty sure that a little research will show the temps on days just before Xmas of 1990 set some record lows that have not been broken since. Early December of 1972 was bad too, but nothing like 1990.

Still, this latest freeze has managed to slime or crisp up most of the tropical & subtropical plants in my landscape but my citrus have survived. I have a giant and prolific 15' gumball of a kumquat tree (supposedly the hardiest of the citrus) that had every leaf turn white in 1990 and froze back to a few woody 6' stubs. It recovered back to giant size quickly and it's been completely unaffected by this latest cold snap. Using that tree as a guage, as well as the fact that my pipes didn't freeze, I can confidently say it didn't get as cold this time around.

The trouble with the weather reporters, especially those on TV news, is that this area's weather is so boring for them that they feel the need to hype up everything. They predict the storm of the century and we get some sprinkles. They give out freeze warnings when there are really only a few parts of the Bay Area that should expect a bad freeze. It's always the end of the world with any weather event, and I've learned not to take any of them seriously anymore. I can tell what's really going to happen by stepping outside or looking out my window or at the satellite view. For all of their computer models and slick graphics, the TV weather people are more a source of amusement than accurate information anymore.

Now if we can just get some rain. I'm beginning to worry.

I dont' need no stinkin' dishwasher or shake that mo

I was visitng my father in the Tampa Bay area of Florida (HI TERRY *WAVES*) some years ago, not that many however. We went out to the Bouzoukia [Ethnic night-club music dancing, dinner] to do some bonding. OPA! OPA!

It was 40*F that night in January. There was not a SOUL anywhere. I just had to die laughing. I guess it's all realative to what you expect and are used to.

(The bell-dancer made it. That's all that mattered to me. Yes, she chose me to dance with me since I was the youngest guy in there; I put her to shame. My aunt was a professional belly-dancer and taught us all *COUGH* a few tricks.)
