Finally got one!
I am a Whirlpool employee and this is my personal opinion.
Courtesy of Whirlpool, I got an Agi-Peller, which does work more similarly to an impeller than an agitator from my understanding. The machine is supposed to use up to 18 gallons of water per cycle less than standard top load washers (I think those are usually around 40?) So it might do a full rinse and just require a Downy Ball, I'll have to ask at some point.
This Agi-Peller is used and was graciously given to me by one of the lab managers at Whirlpool. It's a little scratched up (mostly just the cap) but I look forward to putting it in one of my BD Whirlpool agitator washers to see what it does. I know the stroke and programming is different, but given that the water level is controlled manually and the machines share every other component aside from programming, it should give me an idea of what to expect should I ever decided to get the OPL version of this machine! I think the reason it has the center post is that most people wouldn't notice that the fins are shaped oddly and in theory, it should help reduce tangling in the tall, narrow tub.

In the appliance store, I tried pulling the Agi-peller up off the drive shaft, but the salesmen were eyeing me suspiciously, (funny!)--and it wasn't yielding.
Will it pull straight up and off or is there a screw under the unsuspecting cap?
Its stark beauty harkens back to the original black Surgilator in a cool consistency of design and maybe a smidgen of brand pride as well.
Would love to see it pelling about, when you're free to film. The "OPL version" is new to me. What does it stand for? Thank You.

There is a screw under the cap just like any other Whirlpool agitator!
OPL means "on-premises laundry." It's a term for non coin-operated commercial machines, like what you'd find at a gym, hospital, salon, etc. This version is usually more flexible.

Thought the original Chrome tops turn by hand, no driver needed, no? The WP Convertible Agi has a thin wafer top hiding the screw which is what looks to be the case with the Agi-peller.

Whirlpool may just be on to something here. A impeller with a post in a machine with a more reasonable amount of water may solve some of the problems associated with very little water plain impeller AND low water agitator designs. That is to say IF it can achieve reasonable turnover because of the post it would be easier on the clothes than a regular agitator. Although I am only speculating how it would work.

This looks somewhat interesting. I work at home depot in appliances and wonder if I will see them use them in their TL BOL models.

It seems that the Maytag version of this machine has showed up on Maytag's commercial laundry website. This machine is also available in a touch pad version. Wash time and an extra rinse can be added. According to the manual, the Normal cycle does do a bath style rinse but the Powerwash (Heavy Duty) and Delicate cycles do spray rinses.
I think I need one...

Jamie ~ Any machine that conducts the rinse through spraying is one after my heart. I once passed up the Resource Saver Whirlpool that spray rinsed using recirculated water which was spun off and refreshed several times. Wondering if this is a page out of their old playbook. Great of you can find out working in the heart of the matter as you do.
It must be amazing.

Edward ~ Remember when we were warned of dire consequences to clothing if we had too big a load and too little water ? You gave me another thought: People are used to seeing an Agitator in a TL, so this is part of the persuasion campaign for lower water usage.
Jamie's link shows the new Whirl-Tag with a 20 gallon total water intake and a 700 RPM spin, not too shabby for either!

Should The Agipeller be in direct drive washers insted? direct drive washers have more powerfull agitation then the belt drives

I saw a video of the new belt drive and it's the long slow stroke of yore; in fact, the current pattern looked and sounded like a Maytag Gyrator! The guy never added laundry so it was harder to judge actual roll-over.

They had to satisfy the water police on the regular cycle usage, but they are listening to their customers: if you select the fabric softener rinse and the super wash,
you C A N get F U L L fills for the whole load. Y A Y ! Imagine that we have to stand up and hoot for this. It's all so crazy, we can only laugh.

The Agi-Peller does have a older look very Whirlpool .
Almost looks like the classic Surgelator without the vanes.
