Hi i'm from Brazil and i have some questions.I have a refrigerator westinghouse 1950 part Y8156 and I'm restoring that but I have doubts about the frost free system and the mechanical thermostat beside mantegueira (see link). Someone had the electrical and mechanical diagram of that or knows how it work? Thanks and sorry my poor english.

That Is!

The same refrigerator I grew up with, I wish I still had it, it was QUIET as could be, my Uncle gave us a newer one in the 70s and took it to his summer house in Montana, when he sold the place it was still working fine.

The frost free systems in boxes like this that I saw had a plunger on the door that pushed in the round button on the other side of the butter keeper from the thermostat (the one with the W). It was a counter and, after a set number of door openings, it self defrosted.

Thanks for your reply but that model the W button is fixed, and unfortunately, I have no diagrams to understand the system.I have only the mechanical thermostat and when disassembled i no found resistance or fan as in current models.I'm thinking how to find diagrams.i search that in google patents and found nothing. Its hard.

Remove the kick panel--I think it's held on with leaf springs--and see if there is a clock motor for defrost. If yes, the motor has likely stopped running after 60 years. There may be a knob that can be turned manually until it clicks to start defrost. Must remember to turn it again after ~15 minutes to cancel defrost and resume cooling.

I was going to say it's not self defrosting because there is no door button. But the tray beneath the chest is for catching the defrost water. I believe the tray was equipped with a heater to keep water from freezing to it. It could still possibly be manual if you can't find a timer. We had the next newer model, with the button and the power door latch.

Sorry, that's not very definitive but it's all I remember.

I was looking in the internet about more informations and i found this diagram explaining how the mechanical thermostat works, I think what I have is broken because it does not have the contacts.About frost free system ,I found nothing and believe that my refrigerator is missing parts.Im sad cause that is a beautyful model and i wanted that works completely and without adaptations.I'm sendig a picture showing the mechanical thermostat.

After looking at the pictures...

That model is NOT self defrosting, the tray that the meat keeper is attached to is for defrost water, but it was manual, the one we had got defrosted about twice a month by my Grandmother...Fantastic fridge and QUIET!!!
