Westinghouse slant front heating element broke.

I’m helping out a friend with a Westinghouse D6-M. The heating element failed We pulled it out and have visual confirmation of the break.

Of course, parts are NLA. Can we re-string this with a re-string kit for a GE dryer, part numbat WE11X10007? This is the kit to restring the WE11M23 heater pan.

He had a spare element restring, so it’s working again.
Still curious if the GE restring kit could be used in the future though.

Hi Dave, yes there are a number of ways to restring those old elements although I’m not sure that that GE kit is the best kit to do it with.

Aren’t GE heating elements known to droop/sag? Seen videos on YouTube of GE dryer heating elements getting replaced since they were were sagging causing them to ground out.

Hi Sean, there’s no difference in how much elements droop and sag. Any element will droop and SAG and fail sooner if it’s overheated severely nothing special about GE.

John I believe GE went to another heating element design though I don’t know how much better it is than the coil type elements they used since it looks cheaper and prone to failing. You can probably confirm since you see all kinds of dryers in the field on a daily basis.

Drooping

Heating elements can droop. So long as they are sufficiently supported with porcelain insulators that they don’t break or touch metal and ground out, it’s okay.

The new GE elements use a flat ribbon on a mica insulator, basically like a super sized toaster element, mounted in the round pan.
