Aren't you supposed to just empty it every few loads, hence the bag design?

That wasn't what I was expecting to see. Could you possibly show the bag a little more up close and maybe a shot of how it fits inside the hatch?

Sorry to ask all that but the one I saw had a round hose that was like a spring covered in dacron type screen material. It was open on one end and closed on the other and the mystery was what direction this was meant to be put in.

Unfortunately I've never seen a dryer manual for these slant front Westy's that had the lint screen hatch on the top.

In the lint box..I don't have the exhaust hose hooked up, so that's why you can 'see' through the dryer

The pictures are awesome. That explains exactly how it fits and works on your dryer.

They must have made changes as this is what the one I saw looked like on an earlier model dryer. The opening where the air flow from the drum comes from seems to be on the right side.

Since the dryer wasn't connected I couldn't see it operate but assume from the design that the lint would catch on the outside of this round screen when in place.

I'm guessing they changed the design to what you have so the lint would be inside the screen rather than all over the outside of it.

Early Westinghouse Dryer Lint Filters

Weather the lint collected on the outside or in the case of the later style the lint collected in the bag it was a mess to clean and since this area was pressurized lint would leak along with hot moist air around the little door. It is easy to see why WH completely redesigned their dryers in 1964 and basically copied GEs successful design.

 

The earlier slant dryers did have their advantages however, bigger drum, easier to load and unload and fairly good durability in the early models with the motor mounted fan and front drum support rollers. Unfortunately when they lost the front support rollers and added a belt driven blower they were not very durable or long lived dryers.

The leaking of the moist air explains why there is surface rust around the lint door...the later slant fronts drum is only supported by the rear bearing and the bearing on the blower fan seizes up..though the dryer (and laundromat) in the lit posted by pdub are on the wish list!
