I am in. My picking up my nearly new Maytag N2LPS has been put on hold. I hope it is not a definite happening tho. I live in a huge residential community owned by the churches of the town I live in. They have many restrictions about living here. One of them is NO washer/dryer hookups. I got special dispensation from the pope when I moved in to be the first one to have a portable washer and dryer. No one ever said I could not have more than one washer. I now, as you know, have 3 wringers plus my portable GE. Long story short, the management company made an inspection yesterday and discovered my cache. She hit the ceiling. I can keep what I have but no more !! I am the only one in this 128 unit complex to have a washer as they are outlawed now. Chris has told me he will hold Wilma May (he named her LOL) and when the contents of my scrotum grow bigger I will be making the trip to NY to get her. I was angry and sick at the time but, after having talked with Chris accepted his offer to hold her for a little bit longer. I WILL HAVE HER IN MY HAREM !!!

Sorry to bore you with all of this but did want those of you that were following my progress to know there has been a glitch inserted.

Best to all and Happy Maytaging.

Jim

One of them is NO washer/dryer hookups........

I'm sorry but I don't understand.   Do they tell you how much and what type of furniture you can have?   Are you supposed to do your laundry by hand in communal wash tubs?   Or in the church owned laundromat?

I apologize but I would have a REAL problem with someone coming in and telling me what I can and cannot have in my home (i.e. your wringer collection)!

If you are in a condo/apartment I suppose I can understand not allowing personal laundry due to the risk of potential water leaks and damage from it as well as the noise from a spinning washer vibrating of the floor.  What is their reasoning behind this or do they explain it?

Wow... you couldn't tell I have an opinion about this, could you?   LOL

Kevin

P.S.... Sorry to hear your plans to pick up your other wringer have been put on hold!

Kevin-

My Mama lives in a senior complex with the same restrictions, my personal opinion is that they want the income from the coin-op machines. We got around it, though, by sneaking in a Hoover mini dryer that she rolls out. Unless it's warm, and then we wash at my house (imagine THAT) and hang to dry.

Mama refers to her complex manager as the Gestapo. LOL

No W&D

Very common clauses in multi-family leases, by-laws, co-op rules, etc... especially for urban areas. Here in NYC most all rentals and co-ops forbid washers, dryers and dishwashers though that is slowly changing, at least on the high end of things.

Around here the problem is the housing stock is often older and thus the plumbing cannot handle washing or dishwasher dishcharge. Maybe one or two residents but not an entire building full. Then there is the cost of water and sewage discharge which often are not bill separately to residents.

Being as all this many developers and landlords of luxury and even those that pretend to be have realised that people simply will not live without the mod cons of W&D and dishwasher. When someone is paying >$1400 per month for rent you've got to give them what they want. Ditto if they are paying >250K for a shoebox of an apartment.

As far back as the 1980's, dishwashers were available.  Any window treatments had to have a white backing, per the lease.  alr

Geez.  It's not like you'd be using all machines simultaneously.  You're maintaining a collection, not running a laundromat.  There's a difference and they should recognize that.

Oh come on Ralph, you know how blindly focused the church can be on a whole host of subjects!

I don't understand...

I can follow with rules like condo or apt regs. Been there, done that, got the t shirt. But to have the church (the Pope!) approve A washer. Maybe if it was a religion that shunned modern technology like the Amish, maybe? I hope it resolves itself in a good way...

I need

to clarify my comment about special dispensation from the pope. That was to be funny and a joke. However, you are right about it being all about money that is not going to the on location laundromat. I had to get special permission from the board of directors for my portables. The board is made up of 2 members from each participating church in town. I will have my new N soon. I will give this 2 weeks to calm down and then go to NY and bring her home. I CAN NOT let her slip through my fingers. When you live in communities like this you have to accept some rules I guess. This is not a retirement community but rather a very nice brick buildings place to live. I will let you know when she comes home. Thanks for all of the comments and it is good to know others feel as I do.

Jim

PS: Yep, the manager that did the inspection is a female demon from Hell. No one likes her. And, we used to have to have either white or eggshell curtains/blinds but no longer. The minute that rule changed I put new sage colored curtains up LOL. I will get her come hell or high water. She won't even remember what is in my apartment the next time she comes in if she does. There are 128 units for her to tare apart. [this post was last edited: 11/14/2012-16:27]

Pope or no Pope

It's still a dumb rule when applied to your situation.

Shades of Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, where I spent a very long year of college living in dorms that weren't all that far removed from adult daycare facilities.

We weren't allowed to have refrigerators in our rooms because they wanted everyone to pay for food at the various school-run dining facilities on campus.  As a result, many of us had refrigerators in our closets.  The resident advisors weren't allowed to touch anything when doing an inspection, so as long as we had something hiding the cord coming out of the closet, we got away with it.

I've never been placed under such tight-ass living restrictions as that backward administration had in place.  I bailed out of that glorified babysitting institution as soon as I took the last of my final exams.

Go get that machine and enjoy it.  You'll not be causing anyone harm in doing so, and if they're too dense to understand that, you should easily be able to override them.

I can somewhat understand their reasoning of banning a washer on higher level floors due to noise and vibrations. This is mostly an issue with front loaders only. However, wringers are practically noise and vibration free.

Sneak it in and rotate one of the harem girls to hide in the closet.

Maybe get a petition started and send it around, to allow the use of washers/ dryers? 3 or 4 years ago, a new and very nice apartment complex was built in our town, and banned the use of curtains/blinds on the front or back doors (full glass entry doors in front and full glass french doors in back). Apparently, that didnt last long, and they got so many complaints that they eventually provided CHEAP aluminum mini blinds for the front doors only. They were not to be removed and you were responsible for any damage to them. I did in-home care for a lady that lived there, and they constantly fell down. (rant over). Anyway good luck with your washer situation, hope everything comes out in the wash (!)

JIM!

So sorry to hear about your troubles. Do you own or rent? Either way it probably doesn't matter. Rules is rules. But I never heard of unit inspections just for the sake of inspecting them. Sounds like you're living in a Nazi regime and Sgt Schultz just found your tunnel! "Who, me? What washers? I know NOTHING!"

We'll see how this pans out but how I'd look at it is, it could be worse. At least you get to keep what you have. Maybe trade out the N2L's you'd still have 3 wringers and General Burkholter would never know the difference. That is of course, if you can smuggle the washers in and out of the tunnels!

Take Care and keep us posted!!

Stan is right......

a portable kenmore set makes nice nightstands......

a hoover twintub makes a great sofa table....two of them back to back equal a card table...we had a conversation of using one as a recycle bin.....

draw circles on top of the dryer, and call it a stove.....drop down the door and pull out a pie.....extra points if it has a window.....

anything is possible

Tell the manager to go perform a rectal exam on herself!  This is still a semi-free country, apt. complex rules notwithstanding.

Just an update

to let you all know the New N is here and works great. I brought her home last week and guess who helped me unload her and into the apartment??????????? The resident managers husband !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of course local management has no problems with my collecting. He even used the business JD mower with trailer to bring it from the parking lot to my apartment. I posted pics of her in a new thread titled "Finally".

Now to find an NX !!!!

Best!!

Fiscal Responsibility

As an apartment manager the big concern is water damage and its collateral expense. Purchase a renter's policy and give the manager a copy. She'll be assured her butt doesn't end up in a sling if she allowed an exemption that impacted other tenants. I doubt the properly manager has a horse in the race and its an Owner's directive.
