NorfolkSouthern...a few ideas for you...
Well, Norfolk Southern,
I believe that you run thru Ypsialnti and Ann Arbor, crossed over down by the Huron River by The Ann Arbor Railroad, or what's left of it. The Norfolk Southern now mainly uses it's Southernmost branch that runs thru Milan, and also intersects the Annie there too. The old branch that goes thru town is mainly used now by Amtrak, which is the old Mainline for the Michigan Central System...but now that we have our Washtenaw Country railroads fairly straight I digress. Washers here....
Now that we've ascertained that we are both from Ann Arbor, as well as another wash-er-phile as well, I would like to suggest checking out the Ann Arbor Reuse Center on South Industrial. I've seen quite a few oldies, Maytag and Kenmore's in particular there including a few sets over the years. I would also check The Reuse Center out on Jackson Rd. They get lots of older sets I there to start you out with something that you may want.
If you wish to, you can also hit up the Salvation Army on State street. I have found several old machines there and one ended up going home with the other member who resides here in town. Or at least I believe he got it.
I would also check out Heydlauffs Appliance in Chelsea. they get in trade ins all the time, and I know the owners personally as I handle the vacuum stuff on the west side of town, and they send me all their old customers as they chose to disband their small appliance department a year ago. They now only handle large white goods anymore.
In fact they do have saved for me in their warehouse a late 1982 Maytag Master Wringer Washer with pump. It's one of the last that they ever sold, and when the woman died her family just gave it back to them the dealer. I expressed interest and the owner set it aside for me. Come to think of it; I've gotta figure out a way to get that to my storage in Lansing....Hmmmnn...maybe this weekend if it stay's nice.
But these are a few local spots you can try to find you a good older style washer.
Which BTW if you want one that you should never really have to mess with, my hearts set on Maytag. And I think many here will agree that it's a great starter collector washer becasue you can keep using it and using it and needs very little attention...
Good Luck
Chad
Ann Arbor Michigan Too...
