Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I have never understood why those machines had such short washes and unless you got a fairly deluxe machine, it only had one wash because of no electrically operated detergent dispenser. I wonder what kind of people GM hired to design their DWs.

Beautiful kitchen, BTW.

Tom, the only time I saw a open dispenser Frigidaire was for the Deluxe Spin Tube models. And looking at a tech talk for 1964 with this new line, the basic model only had the open cup too. With the S series that was mentioned in a 1969 tech talk, all but the Imperial/CI models with 3, the other front load models, including BOL, had the typical 2 cup design.

I am talking about the cup with the perforated metal cover, basically the wash out type dispenser that I saw in two machines from the mid to late 60s. There was no excuse for such a POS dispenser which shot its wad in the first wash with no pre-rinse to even warm up the machine and its load.

The good thing, Tom, is that they only offered that for one year, 1965. I think it was their attempt to avoid the detergent from being washed away before the actual wash action began. That was a problem on the spin-tube units that began the cycle with a flush. After 1965, the "dispenser" on the lower priced models was a screen in one section of the silverware basket. By 1968, all their dishwashers had the same dual detergent dispenser. Remember, in the 60's, a detergent dispenser was a deluxe feature on higher end models. KitchenAid didn't even offer a double wash until the KD14 series. Lower cost units had screen basket or bird-feeder type dispensers and only one wash. The attached photo shows the silly dispenser from a 1965 Deluxe model with one wash.
