Laundry day
Out of habit, my wash day usually occurs on Saturday, sometimes Sunday. It's only me so I rarely wash more than two loads per week.
First load (whites - hot or warm wash, cold rinse): Dish towels, dish rags, light-colored hand and bath towels, wash cloths, socks, T-shirts, and full-size bed sheets and pillow cases if the load isn't big
Second load (colors - cool wash, cold rinse): Dark hand and bath towels, wash cloths, jeans, T-shirts, dress shirts, polos, slacks, sweat shirts, and dark socks; dark full-size bed sheets and pillow cases are usually washed by themselves
I usually wash with liquid Tide (either original or Clean Breeze) and rinse with Clean Breeze Downy. Although, lately, I've been using a new homemade concoction for laundry soap. I've included the "recipe" below.
Homemade Laundry Soap
Powdered:
1 cup Fels Naptha or 1 bar of Ivory bath soap, grated
1/2 cup borax
1/2 cup washing soda
Mix all ingredients together. Use 1 to 3 tablespoons per load.
Liquid:
1/3 bar Fels Naptha or 1 bar of Ivory bath soap, grated
1/2 cup borax
1/2 cup washing soda
Put soap in old sauce pan. Add 6 cups water and heat until soap melts. Add borax and washing soda; stir until dissolved. Remove from heat. Pour 4 cups hot water into large bucket. Add soap mixture and stir. Add 1 gallon plus 6 cups water and stir. Let mixture sit for 24 hours and it will gel. Use 1/2 cup per load.
Tip: Use 1/2 to 1 cup white vinegar for fabric softener.
I've never tried the "jellied" version because it seems too time-consuming, but the powdered version works very well and seems to leave clothes brighter and fresher. Contrary to what most people believe about using vinegar in the rinse water, it doesn't leave an odor behind.
Give it a try! I'd be interested in what you think!
