Hooray for Craigslist, and an extra hooray for folks who take good care of their machines.

David and I found the washer on a Craigslist post describing it as "how much will you washer-scrapper/repair guys give me for a Maytag with a burned-up motor?"

We met the wonderful gentleman who posted this, and then he said, "Hey, do you want the matching dryer too?"

No burned-up motor here. Something was seized in the mechanism, and a nudge from Roger to the power unit freed it, and it's been ducky ever since. The burning odor was due to the belt being polished by the motor pulley with the tranny stuck in place.

Not a speck of rust on the inside, and has the cool bleach-dispenser system. I'll give you a hint, though, that the tray underneath is not for flood prevention.

Special thanks to Brian (beekeyknee) for the definitive Maytag reoperation guide, which I will be using at some point to give her a fresh lease on life.

So, new damper pads and a tranny rebuild are in her future. The dryer works perfectly, though, and now the only appliance in the house that doesn't go "ding!" when it's finished is the dishwasher.

You know, that dishwasher of yours does go ding! Granted, it's the wine glasses being banged together by the hurricane inside that tub...

The dryer is fab and--unusual for an electronic control, in my experience--dries even mixed loads properly. Not too dry, not too damp, just mmm-mmm-good.

The washer is beautiful inside and out, but needs a rebuild. It was a longtime victim of cold-water washes (muck) and closed lids (edge rust), which can both be addressed.

The mechanism sounds okayish, but could be better, and since we want to hang onto these for a long while (a first for the otherwise fickle Marler household), it needs to be done.

The damper pads are crispy, so that's getting ordered first; the mech rebuild will probably wait until the fall (I learned last summer not to attempt much of anything in the desert sun), because we have the Easy and wringer to soldier through the laundry without relying solely on these. The dryer doesn't see much action anyway, since running any electric dryer at our house causes the meter to spin like a Frisbee.

Initially, the washer was posted with no pic, and just asked for a scrapper/repairer to make an offer on an "older" machine. Since "older" might encompass anything from 1948 to 1991, I wasn't sure whether this was an older helical unit, or maybe even some Norgetag.

A couple of days later, with no bites, he posted the actual picture of the machine, which did the trick for me.

The dryer was, as I'd mentioned, a pleasant surprise, and he was glad that these were going somewhere to stay in service, not become a Prius. When we walked into his laundry room, though, I saw the telltale ghostly square of Crisco on the floor, and he said, "There is that." :-) (And since only one Maytag out of every five we find doesn't spray oil in all directions, that's okay.)
 
That is beautiful! Wasn't there another gold set on CL as well? Perhaps you may need some parts.

You beat us to the solution for the "fickle Marler household". Roger and I have been searching for a nice KitchenAid washer for you for a while now, but we'll put that on the back burner. For now. :-)
