Got a day off today and wanted to surprise the wife and kids with a nice, hearty stew. But now I can't find the recipes I saw on here a few weeks back.
Does anyone have the link to the thread?
Or how about a fail safe, tasty recipe?
Thanks
Steve

Here's my stew recipe. I make this in the winter and eat on it for days. I use a 6 qt. crock pot for this. Often, I throw everything together before work and it is ready when I get home.

2-3 lbs stew meat
5-6 large potatoes, cut in large cubes
6 carrots, sliced
15+ pealed pearl onions
3-5 celery stalks, sliced
2 cans corn
2 cans Rotel tomatoes
1 14.5 oz. can tomato sauce
1 bottle German wheat beer

If you wish, you can brown the meat, I usually don't. Combine everything except tomato sauce. If needed, add water to just cover everything and cook on high 8-10 hours. Add tomato sauce and cook 30 minutes more.

Hi Steve, here is a recipe that Hans put up. I have been making this one for years. So good and so easy. The only thing I do different is to add fresh mushrooms. Try it you will love it. Terry

As usual...a Betty Feezor recipe! This is one of those.."That will never work " recipes that is fantastic!
In a large heavy covered casserole..I use a Guardian service small roaster. place 3 lbs lean stew beef, do not brown, just put it in .
add in order
6 cut up carrots
3 stalks celery
1 large onion sliced
3 large potatos quartered
over this sprinkle
2 tsp sugar
2 tsp salt
2 TBSP tapioca
over this pour
1 1/2 cups tomato juice
cover and place in 250 degree oven for 41/2 to 5 hrs, take out and enjoy...try it you wont believe it!!!

Sam,

Minute tapioca in the red box. With Hans' recipe I cheated and used 2 pkgs. frozen stew veggies. They have everything listed in the recipe, and you just add them frozen. I use Freshlike brand. You can't tell the difference.

It was a hit!

I got to try Terry's recipe today and it went over well with my wife and my daughter. Jr. wanted no part of it. Getting him to come to the supermarket for the ingredients was as much as he was going to tolerate.

I put everything in a large, glass covered casserole as directed but being a bit rushed for time, I cooked it at 350(preheated oven) for about 45 minutes and then back to 250 for about 3.5 hours and it was almost as good as I remember when my Mom made it. The gravy could have been a bit thicker but it was fine for dunking crusty bread in it! Thanks Terry, it's a keeper!

Next time,Westie, I am going to try your recipe on here with the beer in it. Sounds like it would tenderize the meat more and add a nice flavor to the mix.
do I have to cook it for 8 hours though?

Glad you liked it Steve. That was the recipe that Hans posted back a while. The one I have used for years is the same only that it called for the fresh mushrooms. It was called French Oven Stew. Now you can really impress your guest! LOL
