What is the BEST Detergent to use for my 1985 Maytag A712 Rebuild

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I have an '87 A712.  Since the Neptune is my daily driver, the 712 gets whatever the Neptune gets.  Right now I have Persil and Oxyclean liquids.  I use the 712's automatic soak & wash setting for heavy soil and it seems to do a good job.  Plus, there's no dumbing down of the hot water.  I'm still unclear about whether the Neptune interferes with hot water temperature, so for hottest possible washes, I use the 712.

After I got the 712, I went to the dollar store and got Mexican powder.  That stuff created suds lock conditions so I stopped using it.

After I discovered Persil Discs, that one that has the red chamber in the middle, the world is no longer the same.

I always HATED whatever pre-measured detergents, until I decided to buy Persil to give it a try. I had some issues the first three times i used it (oversuds) because I simply tossed 3 discs thinking one would never clean. I ended up suds locking the SQ Ultra-Mate really bad. I mean, even the circuit breaker tripped and I had the washer throwing up suds and making a mess in the laundry room floor and I needed to rinse 4 or 5 times only to get rid of the suds lock

That episode was enough to hate Persil Discs but then i learned how to dose it (1 disc, no matter what, unless I'm washing a full load of super nasty clothes that will leave the water looking like chocolate milk (only case I'd add a second disc)

I decided to try a load with ONE disc, thinking it would never clean enough. OMG that thing is a bomb! That thing is awesome! It cleans better than anything else. all my towels are white and they have never been so bright. My trick? full load (i mean, a real full load) in the SQ Marathon, super hot water, 1 disc (instead of 1 scoop of Tide with Bleach that I always loved) 1 small scoop of sodium percabonate. that's it.

I use my towels only once and discard to wash (so you can imagine i have a mountain of towels every two days) as I don't reuse them, they're not "that" dirty. Anyway, first time i did that, the water drained yellow/light brown. I thought there was something wrong with the washer, maybe the washer was dirty.

I noticed the real difference only after the towels were folded and put back in the shelf. I could tell the difference. the Persil washed towels were much whiter than the Tide with bleach washed ones.

The Persil liquid was rated best...haven't tried the disks...my 712 needs a detergent that is a low-suds-er but, some suds, combined water softener and a fantastic cleanser...when I removed the tubs I discovered caked detergent residue on the transmission drive post
