What is the deal with Persil?

I haven't seen the powder in years. Last time I can recall, for sure, was about 10 years ago. AFAIK it's not listed on the Tide website, so it's very possible the powder is no longer in production.
 
to be fair, Tide doesn't list all their products on their website. Tide Ultra Free and Clear isn't on the Tide website, even though it exists and widely available at Target.
 
I've never tried it.  You'd think they might have kept the branding/labeling stable for a few years to get consumers comfortable with it.  Instead it seems to change constantly like Tide.

If you live near a Hannaford's (and I would assume Food Lion as well) the 16 ct Power Caps are currently discontinued. I was able to get several packages for under $2.00 each. Yes, I cleared them out.

It is pretty clear Henkel is going after Tide. Neither Lever Bros, Dial, Purex or anyone else had the funds and or chops to take on P&G which has kept Tide on top pretty much since it was introduced over 70 years ago now.

Henkel made some missteps with early Persil (scent, frothing, etc...) which to their credit they listened to market research and consumers, and now have switched things up. Don't see anything wrong per se in changing some side marketing/branding. The core "Persil" name remains the same which is what matters. The rest is really Marketing 101: make changes in a product and slap a "new and improved" label on it or whatever.

If "new and improved" isn't trumpeted people won't know and or will assume what is on offer hasn't changed since last time they or someone else (including reviews) tried.
 
It smells great and is very good at removing stains

My wife and I have been using it as our primary detergent for clothes. I know that liquids aren't a front loader's best friend, but we use about two tablespoons and that works well enough. I do switch it up and use Arm and Hammer powder for bedding and towels. Persil is a no-go for pillows, mattress pads, packable coats/vests, etc., as those items act as a sponge and will create a LOT of suds, no matter how careful you are with dosing.

I like to use Persil as an all-purpose cleaner. One gallon of warm water, a smidge of bleach and a teaspoon of Persil makes a great kitchen cleaner.

Tide Free and Gentle can be found everywhere, our local Rite Aid carries it along with other shops.

Tide Ultra Stain Release Free OTOH seems only to be sold at Target. Have heard Wally World has it, but cannot confirm. Even on Amazon the stuff is sold via third party vendors at far more than the MSRP of $13/bottle.

Yesterday I've found the Persil Discs and I couldn't resist.

I bought the 3 boxes that were available at Hell-Mart, gave 1 to Kevin so he can also try it and rushed back home to do laundry.

I used only 3 "discs" in the Magic Chef and 2 in the Hotpoint.

It cleaned very well, the scent is too weak (I'm a south American Mamacita, for me a good detergent has to be noticeable 1 mile away, at least)

And I noticed something quite annoying.

During the wash, Zero suds (no pun intended, Jon). nothing zit, nada. Not even a single bubble.

Drain. spin... nothing no suds lock, no bubbles, no nothing.

Filled for first rinse.... WTF! water turned white...started agitating... OMG... suds cake in the hotpoint? We were talking about that washer days ago and I was bragging about how it never suds locked even when I intentionally overdosed Tide.
First rinse drain and spin... suds lock. it was "THE" sudslock.

spin aborted, i started to fill the washer to start an endless sequence of fill, agitate 30 seconds, drain... Suds gone in seconds. The washer acted like I poured a whole bottle of softener in it but it was just plain water.

Tried in the Maytag A50.

1 disk, full load...

Wash: it looked like plain water.
1st spin: no problems at all. it felt like I was draining and spinning the final rinse with tons of fabric softener.

1st rinse: water turned white the moment i dropped the clothes back, with the washer off, it looked like I've poured whole bag of mexican Ariel in the washer. again, tons of suds.

Spin after first rinse (maytag A50 spin dryer, not draining the washer simultaneously) Suds squirting everywhere, the mother of the suds lock. When I stopped the spin dryer, the drum was full of suds.
Drained the washer, transferred the load back to the wash tub and started rinsing the spin dryer with a hose. Suds gone in seconds again, just like when we use fabric softener to kill a suds lock.

So basically it is a "no suds" detergent when washing and during the first spin, but as soon as the first rinse starts, it acts like a regular detergent overdose and then on the second rinse the suds disappear almost instantly. That is VERY strange.
 
You all have piked my curiosity again and bought a new small bottled of Persil Deep Clean 10 Dimensions of Clean. They definitely toned the scent down, and it cleans about as well as anything I've used, really noticed it on dirty jeans worn in gardening and lawn work. Still currently using T/L Speed Queen and still running 2 rinses, but I do believe they toned down the sudsing a bit. Am not sure that it will be my "go-to" daily detergent though, as there are other less expensive brands on the market that clean acceptably well and doesn't create as much froth.
Wish Henkel would improve All Free & Clear to remove tough odors, found that it cleaned well but odors had a tendency to linger so I quit using it after I dog sat to stinky dogs and felt the rest of the laundry wasn't "fresh". Have always felt that Henkel could have improved All to a point that it could have knocked Tide out of the ball park so-to-speak if they had kept improving it. But they went after a niche market (and did well with the Drs recommendations advertisements). Certainly enough people use it to be included in lab testing.

HEB grocery store's house brand Bravo is still my "go-to", hard to beat for the price and I think truly formulated for Texas hard water, no second rinses required.

Would still like to try Rosealies No Suds though. Maybe one day it will be offered again. My quest for the perfect detergent continues! Lol!

All always has been a MOL To BOL detergent

Was never going to compete with Tide; it didn't back in the "Bleach, Borax and Brightener" days, and surely non of the "stain lifter" versions would either.

That being said not everyone needs or wants the full power of Tide, or more to the point wants to pay dear for laundry detergent. All Free and Clear seems to have a decent enough following so there is that to consider.
 
There was a $2.00 off coupon in Sunday's paper for All Single Dose Products and one of them was a odor buster. I sure am glad that my laundry does not smell that bad, but I kinda wonder if it might not be the machines that are stinking from all of the cold water washing or the cold water washing not being able to remove the odors.
 
I used 3 in the Magic Chef & 2 in the Hotpoint

 

 

Thomas, you may want to try "not" over dosing this detergent and see what happens.  I mean 2 "discs" in that little compact Hotpoint and 3 "discs" in the still somewhat compact Magic Chef, WOW!  But then I suppose you do always over dose detergent for every load, don't you?

It will be interesting to see if / how the SCW2GEN sudslocks with just 1 Persil disc.  With 2 disc/pods it most definitely will! 

  

 
 
Interesting about the suds lock. I haven't had that happen since I put 1/4 cup of ERA in an HE top loader.

For persil pods, even with my old Maytag water waster, I never found the need to use more than 1 pod. The detergent is plenty concentrated. The only time I ever used two was when I had a very full load of very very dirty camp gear. (that got a double wash it was still so filthy after the first.)

I know some suggest using 2 or 3, and sometimes 4 pods for a single load, but I can't imagine any washing machine actually needing more than one.
 
Can go both ways

Ideally if enough detergent is used hard water minerals and or soils are kept in suspension to be rinsed down drain.

IMHO with some top loaders because of wash action and some other factors whatever scum there is remains to a point on top of water and thus clings to agitator and tub at water line.

The thing is not the overdose. It's when the suds lock happened.

During the wash it was ok. first spin, ok. (theoretically i should have a suds cake and a monster suds lock at this point.

Filling for the first rinse.... Booom! I thought i would have suds up to the roof. seconds spin, monster suds lock i had to abort because i was afraid it would end up breaking the belt. it was like 5 seconds filling and the drum suddenly was halfway full with suds and the suds were going up much faster than the water level. (when the hotpoint reached low I already had a suds cake higher than the control panel.) It looked like that hair mousse that expands in contact with the air.

started filling the second rinse.... like 10 seconds filling.... ding! suds disappeared and I was there with that "what?" face, scratching my head, not understanding anything. i mean, all that mountain of foam simply disappeared. it was like a full size top load full of suds and then you suddenly pour a whole bottle of fabric softener. or when you put a piece of styrofoam in a tray with acetone.

But the most interesting is the wash water and the first spin were like i had put nothing in it. no suds, no suds lock. the washer drained just like a final drain using fabric softener.

In other words, when i had the perfect environment for a massive suds lock, nothing happened. When i had an environment that would be impossible to have a suds lock, a monster suds lock happened.

Last night darryl and I ran a load in the Silk Lux using only one disc.

2 sweatpants.... 1 disc.... no suds, no suds lock, it was just perfect.

And the smell... well... Gelson sniffed the pants and said they smell great. I had to focus and sniff it like a dog... i could barely notice some scent (excellent scent by the way), not that musk thing, but too weak.... It almost smelled like nothing.

I liked the Persil, the only bad thing is that I'll have to use only 1 disc, no matter what and stand that boring wash with no suds at all, even knowing that 1 disc is enough to clean well.
 
I think they tried to do something like the Argentinian Skip liquid from the 1990's

it was a white liquid almost like elmer's glue (smells great BTW).

When the washer was agitating, it would create lots of suds, when the washer paused to reverse (front loader) the suds disappeared instantly. this would happen for the first 15 or 20 minutes washing.... then the water would just turn white like milk with no suds at all. Never had a suds lock using that detergent, even overdosing.
