What is Your Daily Driver? (Automobile)

My “company truck” is a 2016 F-150 that I drive daily. Back in 2018, I bought a 2018 Honda Accord Sport 2.0T with a 6-speed manual transmission as my personal vehicle. I have loved Accords since I was in high school, and was excited when this car came out and I just had to have it.

I still really like it, but it’s not quite as exciting as I thought it would be. It’s fun to drive with the turbo engine, but it’s fairly rough riding and not exactly the pleasurable ride I remember from my younger years. My dog doesn’t love it either. He prefers to ride in the truck. lol

I hate the thought of getting rid of the Accord, but I really think I like the idea of it more than the actual car itself. I think I really want an SUV. I like the Audi Q7, but it’s quite pricey, and even after a modest refresh the 2020 Q7 looks dated. I’m really intrigued by the Kia Telluride, but the fact that it’s a Kia causes a bit of hesitation. I did have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata that I drove for 5 years and it was very reliable, so I suspect the Kia will hold up well.

What is your daily driver? Perhaps I will find a bit of inspiration here as you all have such good taste!

Up until March, my daily driver was a 2016 Dodge Durango. We traded that in for a 2017 Subaru Outback for my husband. He had previously had a 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser. That got sold and my toy car became my daily driver. My toy car is a 1989 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe. Just a couple weeks ago, I purchased a 2003 Ford Ranger. That is now my daily driver and the Thunderbird is now back to being a toy car.

In June 2013 I traded my 18 year old Silverado because of a rotted frame and not passing state inspection, thanks to the salt in winters here for a new Silverado that is even more dependable and more comfortable and powerful and better mileage than my old one. Now that I am totally retired, driving is something I'm not interested in having to do but this truck will plow right thru a snowbank as high as the hood without spinning a wheel.

My daily is a 2000 Golf TDI 5 spd and I just bought a 2007 Toyota Tacoma base model 4X4 with regular cab, short bed and 5spd with 51k and a brand new frame from Toyota

Mostly I drive my 2003 Subaru Baja (AKA a Legacy super short bed pickup) around town, but I've made some longer trips in it.  The furthest was a drive to L.A. -- about 350 miles.  I wish it got better mileage, but I think that's the price you pay for AWD, even with a 5-speed stick.    It has 131K miles on it.  It had 121K on it when I bought it a few years ago.   It has hauled a couple of refrigerators, large furniture items, and I've even fit a 12' 4x4 post in it with tailgate down and bed extender deployed along with rear seats lowered and interior access hatch opened.  Since owning the Baja, I've developed an appreciation for Subarus in general, particularly where longevity is concerned, and I'm impressed with the solid feel of the Legacy/Outback model line with its beefed-up chassis compared to the smaller, lighter models like the Forester and Impreza.

 

The nice car is a 2012 MBZ GLK 350 -- the last year that they didn't shut off the engine at a stop light.  I hate that asinine gas-saving feature and purposely waited for 2012 or older GLK to come along.  It's a nice size and a pleasure to drive, but visibility could be better.  It only has 50K miles on it.  I've been asking myself why I even keep it since it's just me in the household now.  I like a comfortable car for longer trips and drove some other makes before deciding that the GLK offered a superior experience.   The driver's seat is very comfortable, and it was a good value. 

 

I can't quite embrace a situation where my only car is a stick.  Not in Bay Area traffic.  So for now the GLK remains in the stable.   I don't know what I'd replace it with that would provide anywhere near the smooth, quiet ride and acceleration.   Dave and I have owned four MBZs over the years and I've been spoiled by the civilized driving experience they offer.  My dad was a Lincoln man, so I guess I take after him.

I Guess I’m Boring

A 2007  red Honda Civic 4 door sedan that I bought new in ‘07 and only has 62,474 miles on the odometer.  I hardly drive at all anymore, no need to.  The last fill up was on 8-5-20 and I only drove 257 miles from the previous fill up on 3-5-20.  Its the longest i’ve ever owned a car.

 

I used to buy a new car ever year before I retired.  It was  like my incentive to continue as an “indentured servant”, LOL.  And drove about 12,000 miles a year.  

 

My little Civic is a dependable, comfortable and nimble car.  I enjoy driving it when I do and it feels like an old friend now and its still like new.  We only have one car and have only had one car for the last 39 years, except for a two mo period in 1985 when we had a ‘72 Toyota Corona that David drove to work in San Rafael when he briefly worked for the USPS there and I had a ‘71 Ford Maverick.  We’ve always managed just fine with one car for the both of us.

I have a 2004 Toyota Prius, with 240,000 Miles. It's been the most trouble free, reliable and economical vehicle I've ever owned, Bought it about 5 years ago with 174k on the clock and it hasn't missed a beat. I did replace the hybrid battery around 200k, with a low mileage used one, but other than that, nothing but normal maintenance. That battery is now starting to show it's age, but I'm still averaging 44-45mpg in normal driving. The only issues with the car in 240,000 miles are it does burn a little oil (1/2 quart in 4-5,000 miles) and the CD player no longer works. A/C is still icy cold. Will do 80 down the highway with no problems. Paid off and now I'm going to drive it until the wheels fall off!
Mom has a 2007 Lexus Rx350 that she bought back in March, and decided she really doesn't like driving anymore, even with a new car, so I do most of the driving when I can. It's got 163,000 on it now and rides smooth as silk. We have a couple minor issues to fix, but being that it's built on a Toyota drivetrain, I expect at least 200k before any major problems pop up. It's truly a luxury SUV, amazingly comfortable and with 270 horsepower to all 4 wheels will do 0-60 right now.

since May of '18. Don't drive everyday, so only 10,000 miles. Goes back next May.
Nice point a to b transportation, since you really do need a car here. Only busses, no light rail, etc. Even Cleveland has that.

2018 Subaru Legacy Limited

In January 2020 I traded my 2014 Mustang Convertible for the 2018 Subaru Legacy. My main specification was the safety systems on the Subaru. Eyesight system to mitigate front collisons and blind spot monitor for lane change protection. There are other systems available like lane keeping which I do not use. The other feature that was maybe even more important is the CD player. Most Subarus have them. Also the Limited has navigation, leather interior, automatic air conditioning and a wonderful Harmon Kardon radio and music system. Of course my phone works in there too. Got it used as a previous rental so it was reasonably priced. All wheel drive is nice in the winter driving over Donner Pass to Reno. I miss the Mustang as it had very good acceleration and great handling. I would get another Mustang with the safety features, but those are rarely ordered on that car.

We also have a 2008 Ford F150 XLT with about 35,000 miles on it and in great shape.

It’s my first SUV, I’ve been pleased with it, but would like to trade up to a 2018 or newer redesigned one.

I drive a 2015 Forester and been very happy with it, no problems so far knock on wood,, 67,000 miles (108,000 kilometers) Has the eyesight which I really like for the auto cruise control . It has applied the brakes automatically in a couple of instances where I could have gotten into an accident. '

My other vehicle is my 98 Honda Valkyrie bike, 1500cc flat six with 6 carbs and 6 pipes... maybe my last bike, I haven't seen anything else much on the road that I would trade it for. Big fast, comfy and handles great. This is my 48th year of motorcycling

My daily driver is a 2006 Ford Freestyle, had since new and absolutely love the car. It has been on trips from Maine to Florida and never has slipped a beat, I guess that's why we still have it. Comfortable, versatile and holds a lot of stuff. See no need for a new car at this time.

I drive a 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid. It is an SE in Blizzard Pearl with all three of the options for that model. Navigation, Sunroof, and Qi Wireless charging. She has 72K on the clock now. The only issue with the car is that it costs an additional $100 per year for license plate tags in Ohio.

An old man like me is perfectly at home in an old Cadillac. My little 1998 Eldorado Biarritz is fun to drive and suites me just fine. I don't drive much...27,000 miles on it. I replaced the factory audio so it's up-to-date as far as navigation, internet radio (I'm lost without Pandora) etc. I have been thinking about a new car but my garage only has room for 2. Putting any vehicle out in the driveway in the desert heat is a death sentence. The Buick is 55 years old and has earned it's place out of the sun.</span>

A friend of mine had a similar Smart. Hers had the replaceable plastic panels, with a mix of black panels and white panels. She had the personal number plate "ORCA."  A mini-whale?

Unfortunately the Smart didn't survive a collision with a big grey kangaroo. But my friend was unhurt. Impressive for such a tiny car.

I drive a 2016 Ford Taurus, which I got used about a year and a half ago with 13k miles. It just rolled over to 26k.

At some point, when I have my own place, I want to get an older minivan, such as a mid to late 2000s Chrysler Town and Country to use on the weekends.

I still have my 2012 Smart that I ordered new then according to my specifications. I have only driven 57579 kilometers with it (35777 miles) with it. I ordered the red interior with the red exterior, a combination you alsmost never see.

I've had my '04 Honda Pilot for almost 4 years now and like it. 2nd and 3rd row seats fold down for hauling capacity, and oh the things we've hauled!

My brother had a first generation Enclave and loved it. After his passing my niece took it but she felt it was too big for her. She traded it for a new Encore and loves it.
